Congress controlled Patel Nagar until 2008, with victories from Ramakant Goswami in 1998 and 2003, and Rajesh Lilothia in 2008. However, AAP emerged as the dominant force, securing consecutive victories in 2013, 2015, and 2020. The party also demonstrated its stronghold in the 2022 municipal elections, winning all wards in the constituency.
This year, Patel Nagar witnesses an unusual electoral battle with candidates who have switched parties. AAP fields Parvesh Ratan, who had contested as a BJP candidate in 2020. BJP, on the other hand, has nominated Raaj Kumar Anand, a former AAP minister who recently switched allegiance. Congress presents Krishna Tirath, a prominent Dalit leader, who had left Congress in 2015 to join BJP before returning.
Anand's political journey is particularly notable. His wife, Veena Anand, won the seat for AAP in 2013. However, following Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest, Anand raised concerns about corruption in AAP and exited the party. He initially joined the Bahujan Samaj Party and contested the parliamentary elections in 2024 from New Delhi, which includes Patel Nagar. After losing, he joined BJP in July.
