Rep Melanie Stansbury’s protest sparks clash during Donald Trump’s Congressional address
Congress Tuesday evening when Rep Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) held up a «This is NOT normal» sign when President Donald Trump walked into the White House chamber for his speech. The confrontation quickly escalated when Rep Lance Gooden (R-Texas) snatched the sign from her hand and flung it in the air. This exchange has sparked a controversy.
An SOS to the world
As per media reports, Stansbury justified her protest on the grounds that Trump’s actions should not be normalised. Speaking to CNN, she said that she believes it is important to not normalise what Donald Trump and his administration are doing, since it is not only abnormal but also illegal.
She further explained that the dismantling of federal agencies, laying off thousands of federal employees, veterans, teachers, military personnel, etc. are hurting the communities. She added that Trump is becoming chummy with the US’ foreign enemies. She reportedly labelled her sign as an ‘SOS’ signal to the world and added that she thinks she conveyed what she wanted to.

Tensions rise in the chamber
Media reports stated that Stansbury, representing New Mexico’s first district, was one of the several House Democrats who expressed their dissent during Trump’s speech.
