Their delayed return has sparked public and political attention, with former U.S. President Donald Trump calling on Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring them back. However, Williams has reassured the world that she and her crewmate are safe and continuing their work aboard the ISS.
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore launched aboard the Boeing Starliner on June 5, 2024, as part of its first crewed mission. The plan was to test the spacecraft for an eight-day mission before returning to Earth. However, shortly after docking at the ISS, NASA detected several technical issues with the Starliner, including helium leaks and thruster malfunctions.

Due to these concerns, NASA delayed their return multiple times to ensure the spacecraft is safe for reentry. As a backup, NASA has now planned to bring the astronauts back in late March 2025 using a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.
