The evolution of trade union politics in Dhanbad: From independence to present
The trade union politics has traversed the course of time. In several assembly seats in and around Dhanbad, the leading candidates are either running a trade union or are associated with one. Sitting BJP MP from Dhanbad Dhulu Mahto is the general secretary of United Coal Workers Union.
Dhullu Mahto's brother Shatrughan Mahto is contesting from Baghmara. Shatrughan is the president of United Coal Workers Union. People in the area told ET on condition of anonymity that during the recent Lok Sabha polls, Dhulu Mahto mobilised support in his favour through his trade union networks in villages and parts of Dhanbad. Contesting against Shatrughan Mahto is Congress Jharkhand working president Jaleshwar Mahto who is associated with Colliery Shramik Union.
«Trade unions are there but their influence is not much now. Assembly elections are different. There is little impact of being associated with trade unions on voting,» Jaleshwar Mahto told ET.
Congress candidate from Dhanbad, Ajay Dubey is the state vice president of Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC).
