Starz has unveiled the trailer for Season 2 of “The Serpent Queen,” starring Samantha Morton. This historical drama series will return with eight episodes on July 12.
Season 2 of “The Serpent Queen” continues to explore the life of Catherine de Medici. The series is based on the book “Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France” by Leonie Frieda. Catherine, played by Samantha Morton, was one of France's longest-serving rulers, governing for 50 years.
The first season showed Catherine's early years, including her marriage into the French court at 14. In the second season, Catherine becomes the Queen Regent of France, as her son Charles IX reaches maturity. The trailer shows Catherine trying to avoid civil war and clashing with Queen Elizabeth I of England, played by Minnie Driver.
In the trailer, Catherine de Medici states, “Life is about what you’re willing to do to survive. And I am willing to do anything.” This sets the tone for the season, which focuses on Catherine's struggle to maintain power amid political and religious turmoil.
A new character, a mysterious prophet named Edith, emerges in the second season. Edith gains a following that challenges the religious establishment, adding to the tension in France. Catherine must navigate these new threats while trying to keep her control.
