African Union in the grouping and will work closely with the Indian presidency on a joint communique at the leaders' summit, its G20 sherpa Mike Pyle said. The third sherpa meeting discussed the first revised draft declaration in Hampi, a world heritage site famous for the temple ruins of Vijayanagara kingdom. «Absolutely! President (Joe) Biden was one of the first ones to support the idea of the African Union joining the G20 formally,» Pyle said on the sidelines of the sherpa meeting.
He said the US will work very closely with the Indian team to see it to success. «We are very energised and excited by the fact that India's presidency is taking it forward as something they're looking to push across the finish line at the summit,» said Pyle. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to all G20 heads of state proposing the inclusion of the African Union in the grouping.
Officials privy to the deliberations at the meeting said the proposal has received support across all members. Asked about the joint communique at the leaders' summit in September and a possible consensus on the Ukraine-Russia issue, Pyle said the US is very focused on ensuring that the G20 is successful, and that means working hard to unlock an outcome that all G20 leaders can support. «The United States is going to work very closely and intensively with the Indian Presidency to really see that it goes through now,» said Pyle, who is the deputy national security advisor of the US.
