Firstly the entire political scenario would come into a deadlock as soon as either of the candidates do not get a majority Hindi Electoral College. It must be noted that the Electoral College is primarily used for electing the President and Vice President of the United States rather than the national general elections. Therefore, getting a mandate of at least 270 votes out of 538 in the Electoral College is very much necessary for either of the candidates to be voted to power at the White House.

In the case no candidate is able to secure 270 votes in the Electoral College, the 12th Amendment then calls for the House to immediately choose a President through a special kind of vote where each State casts one vote and the candidate that wins over a majority of the state delegation, is voted to power at the White House.
