A series of brutal murders in the city has turned the spotlight on the city which was once a tourist hotspot. Day-to-day life in the city is characterized by people screaming, being shot and being murdered in the streets of the city, according to The Citizen Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice in Mexico. In the year 2022, 600 incidents of homicide were recorded in the city, which has witnessed a triangular gang war. The city which has 330,000 residents has suffered as the city has plunged into becoming a crime haven.

Manzanillo is a port that welcomes 3.5 million cargo shipments every year. It is the control of this port that has led to the three gangs keep on fighting. Access and control of this port can easily lead to the shipment and trade of narcotics such as fentanyl and cocaine. The appearance of these drugs led to increasing crimes in the city. Many residents have also complained that many of their homes are being turned into manufacturing units of fentanyl.
