The debate which will be conducted by CNN will have some basic rules such as turning off mics and commercial breaks. The debate featuring the two will have muted mics when it is not the turn of either of the candidates to speak. Further, during the debate, taking advantage of the expected high number of people who are expected to watch the debate, the channel has scheduled two commercial breaks. The first of the two debates will be held on June 27 in the city of Atlanta.
The issue of muting of mics has been necessitated due to the past experience involving both the candidates. In one of the debates in 2020, when Biden was speaking, Trump had frequently interrupted him mid-way. At one point of time, Biden responded sharply and had asked Trump to “shut up”. This unpleasant experience has led CNN to ensure that in the upcoming debate, the mic in front of the candidate will be muted when the other candidate is speaking. This debate is taking place in a charged atmosphere with both the candidates levelling charges against each other. It has been vitiated by name calling, personal taunts and more.
