Emmanuel Appia*, a fisher from Accra, Ghana, has worked all over west Africa, on Portuguese crab boats, Korean tuna vessels and supply ships for the oil industry.
But it was only when he came to the UK, he says, that he experienced working conditions so dangerous that he feared for his life.“On fishing boats, I’d work 10 hours and rest 14,” says Appia, 37, a father of five.
