In a widely anticipated move to balance the objectives of growth and inflation, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reduced its repo rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 6.25% at the 7 February meeting of its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which voted unanimously for this cut. This reflects a proactive but calibrated approach to support an economic recovery, while staying focused on gradually aligning Consumer Price Index inflation with its mandated target of 4%.

markets UPS Citi Food beautiful A bigger India: The economics behind building tourism beyond the Taj Mahal
Delhi and Udaipur. This being part of the ‘Golden Triangle’, the plane usually had a fair number of tourists, many from France. Seated somewhere near on the plane, I would hear them catalog the ways in which “this could be such a great place if only…”. In French, of course, oblivious to the possibility that anyone around would understand. While I seethed, my nationalist instincts primed. I wanted to ask them how much they paid for their room in a haveli near the lake, and three square meals among the bougainvilleas? Where else could they buy so much beauty so cheap? All that came back to me with the recent stories in the Economist and Le Monde on why India does so badly on tourism: India gets about 10 million foreign tourists a year, while France, a tenth in area and less than a twentieth in population, gets 100 million. France has the Mona Lisa, but we have the Taj Mahal. France is easy for European tourists but we are next to China, the biggest spender in the world on international tourism.

I stumbled upon it in writer and activist Naomi Klein’s 2023 book, Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World, where this quote runs like a refrain, much like an anthem you may hum under your breath every time you are scrolling through the internet, especially if you are looking for news or information that is reliably true.

markets UPS IPO Booking Analysis Trade The IPO Rout: What it reveals about smart money?
What is even more intriguing is how the who-is-who of the mutual fund industry, supposedly smart money, queued up for the anchor book to pay up hefty premiums while similar businesses with comparably better return metrics were going for a song in the secondary markets. This paradox raises very important questions: Was it pure FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) driven by greater fool theory? Did the mutual fund managers undergo irrational pressure to deploy capital in primary issues due to supply constraints in the secondary markets? Or was there an expectation that liquidity-fueled momentum would continue to drive up prices post-listing? Or was it a combination of all of these? We will never know the precise answer. Nevertheless, it is fascinating to pick one case study for examination where these factors were exceptionally evident to illustrate how irrational decision-making can creep into the strategies of mutual fund managers who are meant to be the custodians of retail investors’ hard-earned money.
