While the loss of tax revenue has been estimated to be over ₹16k cr (about $2 bn), the real worm in the bottle has been the hazard posed for many in the form of illicit liquor. By dint of being contraband, no quality control applies to these non-branded concoctions. So, the virtue-signalling in 'dry states' like Gujarat and Bihar is actually viceful. The 'hooch tragedy' claiming 136 lives in Ahmedabad in 2009 still hangs as a warning — not for the dangers of drinking but of prohibition. At a wider level, a 'mai-baap' state treating its citizens as children creates a split-personality citizenry that is moral and amoral at the same time. Whether it be consumption of alcohol or pornography, or gambling, 'sins' have a human tendency of finding dark avenues when prohibited. Instead of 'Gandhian virtue-signalling', efforts should be made to provide safe alcoholic beverages for those who choose to partake in such an adult leisure. To club everyone who imbibes in drink to be a menace — socially or morally, or both — is a recipe for the kind of exaggerated behaviour witnessed on the way to Bangkok.

Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL) on Tuesday said it has formed a new subsidiary entity for transmission, distribution and power supply. Adani Energy Solutions Step-Eleven Limited (AESSEL) has been incorporated with the Registrar of Companies, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on December 17, 2024, and is yet to commence its business operations, the company said in an exchange filing.

While visiting executives used to stay in hotels in cities close to these industrial areas in the past, increasing manufacturing activities and traffic woes are making them seek accommodation close to their factories. At Vithalapur, a five-star property, the Courtyard by Marriott and Hyatt Place, is expected to become operational within the next 12 months, underscoring the demand for premium hospitality options in this fast-evolving industrial hub over a two-hour drive from the Ahmedabad city. In the automotive town of Talegaon on the outskirts of Pune, the recently opened 100-room Fern Residency has gained traction among business travellers. Pithampur in Madhya Pradesh has seen mid-market offerings like Click Hotel and Sayaji, riding on robust corporate demand from the manufacturing sector. These developments reflect the broader trend of hospitality players expanding to locations with significant manufacturing activity.

Gujarat police on Friday said it was probing whether standard operating procedures were in place in connection with the November 27 trench cave-in near the Indus Valley Civilisation site of Lothal, which resulted in the death of a PhD student of Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. Deceased Surbhi Verma (23) and three other researchers were at the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation site, some 80 kilometres from Ahmedabad, for research work and collection of samples when a 10-foot deep trench caved in. «The joint team of IIT Delhi and IIT Gandhinagar had reached the spot to collect soil samples for paleoclimatic study. Surabhi, who was deep inside the pit, died instantly in the cave-in. A woman professor from IIT Delhi was rescued and two researchers from IIT Gandhinagar were unhurt,» said Ahmedabad District Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Jat. Koth police registered an accidental death case and began a probe, he added.

“Work on the bullet train corridor in Maharashtra picked up pace after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government took charge. Entire land acquisition is complete and over 320-kilometres of the physical infrastructure work is ready,” the official said. Commenting on future bullet train corridors, he said experience from developing the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor will come handy. “India is now capable to single-handedly take up this project in more corridors. We should have our own trains in future corridors as well," he said.

Akasa Air announced on Thursday the launch of daily direct flights connecting Abu Dhabi with Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, starting from March 1 and 2, 2025 in a press release. The daily flights from Abu Dhabi to Bengaluru (Flight QP 578) will depart at 10:00 am and arrive in Abu Dhabi at 12:35 pm. On the return leg, Flight QP 577 will depart Abu Dhabi at 3:00 am and arrive in Bengaluru at 8:45 am. Both flights will are non-stop, will operate daily and are set to fly from March 1 and March 2, respectively. In addition, Akasa Air will introduce direct and daily flights between Ahmedabad and Abu Dhabi from March 1, 2025. Flight QP 580 from Ahmedabad will depart at 10:45 pm and arrive in Abu Dhabi at 1:00 am the next day, while Flight QP 579 will depart Abu Dhabi at 2:50 pm and arrive in Ahmedabad at 7:25 pm.
