Delhi HC permits woman to medically terminate 32-week pregnancy
Delhi High Court has allowed a 31-year-old woman to undergo medical termination of her pregnancy of over 32 weeks due to the foetus's abnormalities, which posed a substantial risk of physical and mental handicap. Justice Sanjeev Narula, allowing the woman's plea seeking permission to undergo an abortion, said the continuation of the pregnancy poses a significant risk to the petitioner's physical and mental health and is likely to result in the birth of a child with severe health issues. The judge, following a report given by the doctors of AIIMS, concluded that permitting the termination of the pregnancy was in the best interest of both the petitioner and the foetus. «In the opinion of the court, the diagnosis in the present case clearly qualifies as substantial foetal abnormality with substantial risk of physical and mental handicap,» the court said in its order passed on July 13.

We didn't anticipate winning medals in such a short time, says IIS Founder Parth Jindal
There are many businessmen who have a stake in India's fast-growing sports industry, but a very few with as varied a portfolio as that of Parth Jindal, founder and director of JSW Sports. A sports aficionado, Jindal says he is into it for a dream — a dream to see India becoming a force in the world of sport. Delhi Capitals may be the shiniest of all assets in his possession, but it is the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS) in Bellary, Karnataka, that is his favourite. The sprawling 42-acre facility is an example of personal initiative and collective growth. With the help of over 30 corporates, the facility, in just seven years of its existence, has helped produce multiple champions in Olympic sports. Jindal, founder of IIS, spoke with AMIT CHAUDHARY about his vision, the challenges of securing corporate funding, CSR, looking beyond medals, and more. Excerpts: What was the vision when you decided to start this centre? How has that vision evolved over the years? The vision was to be the preeminent high-performance centre in India for Olympic sports, to work at the grassroots level and create Olympians who can win medals for the country across five sports disciplines — boxing, wrestling, judo, track and field and swimming. We started supporting athletes from 2012 and started building this centre in 2014. Obviously our first medal was Sakshi Malik in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and then Neeraj [Chopra] and Bajrang [Punia] in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Let’s football! A look at India’s inability to play the beautiful game—and what can be done
football across the length and breadth of this well populated, cricket-junkie land were agog discussing the previous night’s two Euro group matches. Jude Bellingham’s 95th minute goal — and England’s lacklustre performance against Slovenia — was discussed threadbare as if it was Gareth Southgate’s waistcoat. Also hogging the Monday tika-chatter was Spain’s impressive win against Georgia, Rodri’s performance especially garnering rave reviews from those who know that the “j” in “La Roja” is pronounced as an “h”. The same day, FC Barcelona stopped all its football academies across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Pune.

2000 cricket match-fixing scandal: London-based bookie Chawla ' main conspirator' ; Court frames charges for trial
cricket match-fixing scandal tainted the gentleman's game, a court here has framed charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy against four accused including Sanjeev Chawla, a London-based bookie and the «main conspirator», and actor Krishan Kumar, the brother of T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar. The 68-page order by the Patiala House district court, which has now paved the way for the start of the trial, noted the alleged role of the four — Chawla, Kumar, Delhi-based bookie Rajesh Kalra and Sunil Dara alias Bittoo. Delhi Police had filed the charge sheet in 2013 against them in connection with the 2000 cricket match-fixing scandal involving late South African captain Hansie Cronje. Cronje died in a plane crash in 2002. Chawla was extradited to India in February 2020.

Delhi Capitals remove Ponting from head coach's post, Ganguly could assume new role
Delhi Capitals on Saturday parted ways with head coach Ricky Ponting after seven unsuccessful years in their quest for an elusive IPL silverware, the franchise announced on social media. While it is still early days, there is every possibility that Sourav Ganguly, the current Team Director of DC, could double up as the head coach next season. «As you move on as our head coach, we are finding it incredibly difficult to put it down in words. The four things that you told us about in every huddle — care, commitment, attitude and effort, they sum up our seven years together,» DC posted on their official 'X' handle. While the franchise waxed eloquent in that emotional post about their long association with the Australian, it is learnt that Ponting was told in no uncertain terms that his performance hasn't pleased the management after being given seven years — unheard of at franchise level without results.

Completely wrong to misinterpret apex court order on Kejriwal: Kiren Rijiju
interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money-laundering case, after the AAP termed it a «victory of truth» and «defeat of the BJP's conspiracy». A bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta referred to a larger bench, preferably of five judges, for in-depth consideration of three questions on the aspect of «need and necessity of arrest» under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. Rijiju said, «There are reports that Kejriwal has got relief. This is not true. The Supreme Court has vindicated the action taken by the ED.»
