health ministry reported that 143 people across India had succumbed to heatstroke this summer, based on confirmed data from states as of June 20. However, numbers collected by TOI from state governments indicate 209 confirmed heat-related deaths, in addition to 239 suspected deaths, totaling 448 confirmed and suspected fatalities this season. The health ministry's data shows Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of such deaths at 35, followed by Delhi with 21 deaths. Rajasthan and Odisha each reported 17 fatalities due to heatstroke. Ministry sources suggest that the death toll may increase as investigations into some suspected heatstroke-related deaths are ongoing. According to TOI's data, Delhi has recorded 76 heat-related deaths so far, marking the highest confirmed toll in the country. These figures were compiled from various government hospitals in the capital. Uttar Pradesh's Relief Commissioner Office reported 51 confirmed heat-related deaths, with an additional 65 suspected heat-related fatalities, including 51 in Ghaziabad district and 14 in Noida district.

India lodged a «strong protest» with the Canadian High Commission in Delhi opposing the organisation of 'Citizen's Courts' by Khalistactivists in Canada. «We have strongly protested at the Canadian High Commission here. Such courts or gatherings are not helpful at all. We have strongly taken it up with them and asked them to take appropriate action in the matter,» said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in response to ANI's question. Special Judge Niyay Bindu of the Rouse Avenue Court highlighted the lack of clear evidence linking Kejriwal to the crime and questioned the ED’s investigative methods. The court noted the ED’s failure to demonstrate how the alleged proceeds of crime were used in the 2022 Goa assembly elections by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The judge pointed out that only Rs 40 crore of the alleged Rs 100 crore had been traced, with no timeline provided for locating the remaining amount. «ED has failed to clarify as to how much time is required for tracing out the complete money trail,» Judge Bindu remarked, emphasising that Kejriwal's prolonged detention without substantial evidence was unacceptable.

Delhi Congress workers on Friday held a demonstration near the BJP headquarters here over the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 examinations. The demonstration was led by Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav. The medical entrance examination, National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET-UG, was conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on May 5 with around 24 lakh candidates taking part. The results were announced on June 4.

These temperatures were significantly above normal by 4-7°C in many parts of Northwest and East India, and north Madhya Pradesh. Warm night conditions were noted in isolated pockets of East Madhya Pradesh and North Rajasthan. The highest temperature recorded was 45.1°C in Kanpur (east Uttar Pradesh) on Wednesday.

Real estate sector saw debt sanctions of ₹9.63 lakh crore during 2018-23 and there is an opportunity of debt financing of ₹14 lakh crore in the next three years, according to a report by JLL India and Propstack. In their joint report — 'Decoding Debt Financing: Opportunities in Indian Real Estate', JLL India and Propstack said the real estate sector in India witnessed debt sanctioning amounting to ₹9,63,441 crore in the last six years.

Delhi Court on Thursday granted bail to Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the Delhi Excise policy case. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in March this year under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for his alleged role in the Delhi excise policy case. The federal agency had last month filed a chargesheet against Kejriwal accusing him of being the «kingpin» in the case. The ED has also chargesheeted the AAP as a co-accused in the case. Vacation Judge Niyay Bindu passed the order today after hearing contentions of ED and Kejriwal over two days. After the pronouncement of the order this evening, the ED requested whether the signing of the bail bond could be deferred by 48 hours so that the order may be challenged before the appellate court. However, the judge turned down ED's request. The bail bond is to be produced before the duty judge tomorrow, the court added. The agency has alleged that Kejriwal demanded ₹100 crore in kickbacks to benefit certain liquor wholesalers in the excise policy. It further alleged that the AAP utilised the bribes in the 2022 Goa assembly elections.

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has entered into an memorandum of understanding with the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT, Delhi) to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) based solutions for improvement in the availability of road signs on national highways, a move aimed at enhancing road safety. The tentative length to be covered under this project shall be around 25,000 km, the ministry of road transport and highways said in a statement issued on Thursday. As per the agreement, IIIT Delhi will conduct surveys for collecting imagery and other data related to availability and condition of road signages on selected national highways stretches.
