NHAI will begin work on the Rs 4,000-crore Chattergala tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir at the earliest, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said on Monday. Gadkari on Monday chaired a review meeting that was also attended by Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh. «The prestigious Chhatergala tunnel work, costing about Rs 4,000 crore, will be executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the underpasses on the Kathua express corridor section, wherever demanded by the public, will be undertaken at the earliest,» an official spokesperson said after the review meeting. During the meeting, Singh thanked Gadkari for accepting most of the suggestions and proposals put across by him.

Kanchanjunga express accident: Railway Board reveals why anti-collision system 'Kavach' was not in place on mishap route
Sealdah Kanchanjunga Express near New Jalpaiguri on Monday, resulting in the deaths of five people and injuring approximately 50 others. The anti-collision system 'Kavach' was not operational on this Guwahati-Delhi route at the time of the accident. Railway Board Chairperson Jaya Varma Sinha revealed that the 'Kavach' anti-collision system was not operational of Guwahati route. «It is currently functional on 1,500 km of railway tracks, with plans to extend it to another 3,000 km by the end of the year,» Sinha said. She attributed the collision to a possible human error by the loco pilot of the goods train, who succumbed to injuries. «It is not there right now,» said Sinha regarding the absence of the 'Kavach' system on the route. Asserting that safety remains the railways' top priority, Sinha mentioned ongoing efforts to ensure the security of train operations.

Water supply to be affected in parts of Lutyens' Delhi
Lutyens' Delhi since the Tilak Marg and Bengali Market underground water reservoirs are receiving less water from the Delhi Jal Board, NDMC officials said on Monday. There is a 40 per cent shortage in supply being received from the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) area, they added. «As informed by DJB that production of potable water from Wazirabad water plant is not running at full capacity due to non-availability of raw water, hence water supply in command area of Tilak Marg underground water reservoir (UGR) and Bengali market UGR will be made available once in a day, preferably in morning time,» the official said. Due to this, water supply will be affected in areas like Bengali Market, Ashoka Road, HC Mathur Lane, Copernicus Marg, Purana Quila Road, Babar Road, Barakhamba Road, K G Marg, Windsor Place, Firozshah Marg, Canning Lane and surrounding areas.

MHA hands over to NIA probe into terror attack on bus in J-K
Union Home Ministry on Monday handed over the probe into the recent terror attack on a bus in Jammu and Kashmir to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), officials said. Nine people, including three women were killed, and 41 injured as a bus carrying pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi plunged into a deep gorge after an ambush by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district on June 9. The terrorists opened fire at the 53-seater bus when it was en route from Shiv Khori temple to Mata Vaishno Devi shrine at Katra. The investigation into the June 9 terror attack on a bus in Jammu and Kashmir has been handed over to the NIA, an official said.

Delhi High Court that smaller teams from their existing strength of five bomb disposal squads (BDS) and 18 bomb detection teams (BDT) can be formed to meet the requirement of more such units in case of an emergency. The Delhi Police said there are also 23 BDS/BDT units of the Central Armed Police Forces stationed in the national capital, which can be deployed after due approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs. It further said five batches of BDS/BDT, having 15 personnel in each batch, will also be trained in this regard.

Sales of affordable homes fall 4% in Mumbai, Bengaluru and other top cities in Jan-Mar: PropEquity
Sales of affordable homes — priced up to Rs 60 lakh each — declined 4 per cent in eight major cities to 61,121 units during January-March this year on lower supply and higher demand for luxury apartments, according to PropEquity. The top eight cities are — Delhi-NCR, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and Ahmedabad. Real estate data analytic firm PropEquity data showed that sales of homes, costing up to Rs 60 lakh each stood at 6,3787 units in the January-March period of the last calendar year. A lower supply of affordable homes is one of the key factors for this marginal fall in sales.
