Summer of '24: India's heatwave turns deadly with over 100 deaths, 40,000 suspected heatstroke cases
extreme weather conditions. And the season is not over yet! India has recorded over 40,000 suspected heatstroke cases amid a prolonged heatwave, reported Reuters. Simultaneously, parts of the country, including the northeastern region, are dealing with severe floods triggered by heavy rain. This extreme weather is part of a larger trend affecting billions across Asia. Scientists attribute these conditions largely to human-driven climate change. North India has seen temperatures soar close to 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) during one of the longest heatwave spells on record, as reported by Reuters.

SpiceJet says AC in Delhi-Darbhanga flight "experienced slight inefficiency" during boarding
SpiceJet on Wednesday said the air conditioning in its Delhi to Darbhanga flight «experienced slight inefficiency» during boarding at Delhi Airport even as media reports suggested that passengers had to wait inside the aircraft for an hour without air-conditioning. The air-conditioning, however, kept working normally throughout the journey and the flight also departed on time, SpiceJet said. «SpiceJet flight SG 476 from Delhi to Darbhanga on June 19, scheduled to depart at 11 am, departed on time without any delays. During the boarding in Delhi, the air conditioning initially experienced slight inefficiency due to extreme weather conditions and both doors of the aircraft being open, as boarding was not via the aerobridge,» the Gurugram-based domestic carrier said in a statement. The airline's statement came amid media reports that passengers of SpiceJet's Darbhanga flight from Delhi had to wait inside the aircraft without air-conditioning for an hour.

Amid water crisis, authorities reveal shocking news: Delhi has extracted 99% groundwater
The report underscores a worrisome trend: despite reduced groundwater recharge, Delhi witnessed an increase in extraction, rising from 98.16% in 2022 to 99.13% in 2023. This disparity suggests ongoing challenges in sustaining groundwater levels across the city. In a somewhat positive note, the report identifies an uptick in urban areas classified as 'safe' in terms of groundwater levels. In 2023, 15% of Delhi's assessment units achieved this status, up from 12% in the previous year. However, the area categorized as 'critical' expanded significantly, encompassing 35% of Delhi in 2023 compared to 21% in 2022.

Explained: How heatwaves disrupt flight operations and may cause mid-air turbulence
Delhi to Bagdogra was delayed due to high ground temperatures, which affected flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. This has resulted in delays as safety guidelines are followed, sometimes requiring flights to wait for wind speeds to stabilize. A senior official from the Ministry of Civil Aviation told ANI that that high temperatures cause the air to become thin, impacting the lift required for aircraft to take off, especially during takeoff and initial climb. This can also cause mid-air turbulence for passengers. In extreme weather conditions like high temperatures and high winds, aircraft only proceed after getting clearance from Air Traffic Control (ATC). To mitigate the effects of high temperatures, airlines may adjust operations by reducing fuel or baggage, and in some cases, even offloading passengers.
