Exclude precious metals from FTA ambit: GTRI
precious metals from its free trade agreements (FTA) so as to curb speculative imports, safeguard foreign exchange reserves and protect India’s trade balance and economic resilience, think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said Tuesday. Gold imports reached a staggering $14.9 billion in November 2024, accounting for 21.2% of India’s total merchandise imports of $70 billion and for the first time, gold surpassed crude petroleum as the country’s largest single import item. Most gold enters India as bars and rods with 99.99% purity, but traders are also using other tariff-free or concessional categories to bypass import duties such as platinum alloys from Dubai, gold compounds and noble metal solutions from Japan, and gold and silver jewelry from Indonesia. These routes push actual gold imports to much higher levels than official figures suggest.

The path to net-zero starts with data
data management system for hundreds of remote sites has helped the Dubai municipality save about $2 million a day by reusing water. At Michelin, a centralised monitoring and energy tracking system across 65 factories helps achieve a 10% reduction in water and energy consumption. It’s clear that, if deployed at scale, technology could be a gamechanger in accelerating the world’s transition to net-zero emissions. So, why aren’t more companies doing this? Lisa Wee, global head of sustainability at industrial software provider Aveva, points to the pace of digitalisation. “We still haven’t seen digitalisation done successfully at scale by most companies. In fact, 70% of industries haven’t yet managed this,” she said. “Until you have that foundation in place, you’re jumping ahead by talking about the benefits of AI or machine learning, because the quality of foundational data is so important.” Wee pointed out that over 50% of industrial data in the world was created in just the last two years. “Once you have good foundational data and a standardised way of bringing it together [across plants or functions], you can deploy analytics on top of it. You can find out, for example, that paint drying might be your most energy intensive process,” she said.

Did Aishwarya Rai ditch the Bachchan surname? Viral video triggers fresh divorce buzz
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan recently attended the Global Women’s Forum in Dubai, where she delivered a heartfelt address on women’s empowerment. The event’s official Instagram account shared a video featuring Aishwarya applauding the panelists for their efforts in fostering inclusivity across various industries. During her stage appearance, the backdrop displayed her name as “Aishwarya Rai | International Star,” sparking social media chatter due to the absence of the “Bachchan” surname. This omission fueled rumors of Aishwarya possibly distancing herself from her marital name, especially amidst ongoing speculation about her and Abhishek Bachchan’s alleged separation. However, a fact-check by News18 debunked these claims. A glance at Aishwarya’s verified Instagram profile confirms that her full name, “Aishwarya Rai Bachchan,” remains unchanged.
