Vaibhav Suryavanshi's journey from Bihar to IPL: Started playing at 8 years, father sold land
Vaibhav Suryavanshi has become the youngest cricketer to be drafted into the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rajasthan Royals secured him for Rs 1.10 crore during the second day of the IPL mega auction. Suryavanshi, who hails from Motipur village near Samastipur town in Bihar, is currently in Dubai for the U-19 Asia Cup. His father, Sanjiv Suryavanshi, sold his farmland to support his son's cricketing dreams. “Woh ab sirf humra bituwa nahi pura Bihar ka bituwa hai (He is not just my son now but entire Bihar's son),” Sanjiv told PTI. He described the financial struggles: “Not just investment, it's big investment. Aapko kya bataye humne toh apna zameen tak bech diya. Abhi bhi halat pura sudhra nahi (I have sold my land. Financial issues are still there).” Sanjiv detailed his son's early talent and training: “My son has worked hard. At the age of 8 years, he excelled at U-16 district trials. I would take him for his cricket coaching to Samastipur and then take him back.” He also addressed concerns about Vaibhav's age: “When he was 8 and half years old he first appeared for BCCI bone test. He has already played India U-19. We don't fear anyone. He can again undergo age test.”

British teenager faces two decades in UAE jail for holiday romance with 17-year-old in Dubai
Dubai, founded by Radha Stirling, highlights the case's uniqueness due to the small age difference and the fact that both teenagers are now of legal age. The group stated that the couple began a relationship while on holiday with their families in September. The girl's mother reportedly discovered the relationship after they returned home and contacted Dubai police. The girl’s mother found their chats and pictures back in the UK. Consequently, Fakana was detained by Dubai police. According to reports, the girl was only a few months younger than Marcus, a fact he was unaware of at the time. Since his arrest, the girl has turned 18. Although Fakana is no longer detained in a police cell, he remains unable to leave the UAE. Meanwhile, his family is incurring expenses of £2,000 for Airbnb accommodation while awaiting the resolution of his case.

It is not immediately clear how a mountain of sensitive data, pertaining to resident Indians' undisclosed properties in Dubai and other cities in the UAE, landed in the hands of German authorities. Nonetheless, the ownership details of over 1,000 Indians have reached the income tax (I-T) department as per the 'spontaneous exchange of information' mechanism under the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) between India and Germany, sources told ET.

After COP29 impasse, all eyes on Rio G20 meet
BAKU: As ministers take over at the climate talks in the Azerbaijani capital, all eyes are on Rio, where the leaders of the G20 are meeting. The first week of the UN climate summit closed with the scheduled assembly late on Saturday night that lasted a little over three hours, ending at around half hour past midnight. The divergences among countries on important issues, such as finance and the path forward on the outcomes of last year's global stock take, and the absence of trust became apparent as countries took the floor to air their views. On some issues such as loss and damage and adaptation, and mitigation work programme the absence of trust and compromise among countries was such that «Rule 16» was invoked. Rule 16 refers to a provision which is used when countries can't even agree to produce an outcome that puts on record the discussions and divergent views. As a result, countries will have to begin their discussions all over again when they meet in Bonn in the summer. The lack of trust most evident on the issue of how countries propose to address and implement the decisions on emission reduction and energy transition agreed to in Dubai and the lack of any real progress on making available climate finance to developing countries.

Stand apart from Bimbo sisterhood
Shalini Passi, the season's new entry from Delhi has become the unexpected star of reality TV show Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives (FLBW). Since its release in mid-October, articles have been devoted to cuts of her blouses. Even Kapil Sharma gushes over her on his show, calling her a 'machhli'. In this post-shame world of reality TV, where everyone is letting it all hang out — from Victoria Beckham's WAG lifestyle to Dubai Bling's idle elite — it's intriguing to find someone who stands out by holding on to something resembling values. Passi's debut sees her descending a marble staircase in couture, dressed as Cleopatra no less, referencing ancient Egyptian iconography by holding daggers — even though she may not know that Cleopatra is typically shown with daggers only in death. The detail is telling: Passi resists the 'lady who lunches' label, though she may well be one. She trains in dance and singing, collects art, and even dabbles in painting — though her portrait of journalist Ruchika Mehta didn't quite resemble its subject. Perhaps she was going for something else.
