Can AI actors dethrone superstars?
Sunny Deol's Gadar 2, Akshay Kumar's OMG 2 and Chiranjeevi's Bhola Shankar did exceptional business across languages, multiplexes and single-screen halls. And Atlee's SRK- starring Jawan, of course, reinforced the trend with first-day collections of ₹74.5 crore. With generative AI becoming pervasive, will deepfakes replace actors? Or bring deceased actors back to life? The current turmoil in Hollywood could well be the trigger.

Hollywood writers strike: WGA urges studios to ignore 'Broken AMPTP Model’ to end protest; read full statement
Writers Guild of America (WGA) have been on strike in Hollywood since May 2, 2023, 12:01 a.m. PDT. In the four months that have passed, several rounds of the WGA representatives’ talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have failed. Now, the WGA has urged the AMPTP to go soft on its stance, if it wants the strike to end. The WGA urged members on September 8 to “stay strong”, while suggesting that studios that want a “fair deal” with their writers will have to agree to the deal or break away from the “broken AMPTP model”. The WGA revealed that some legacy studio executives are keen to agree with the Guild’s stance on certain issues. However, the AMPTP is a system that “favors inflexibility over compromise,” said the WGA. It told members that the studios “will continue attempting to get writers to settle for less than what we need and deserve, and encourage us to negotiate with ourselves”. “But we are not going to do that,” the WGA asserted. “Instead, the companies inside the AMPTP who want a fair deal with writers must take control of the AMPTP process itself, or decide to make a deal separately. At that point, a resolution to the strike will be in reach,” it added in the statement. The WGA also asked members to be careful of studio executives who may try to create dissent among the union writers. “We understand how painful this time is for everyone,” the WGA said to its members. “We are all tired and hurting and scared. There is nothing wrong with saying so.”

As AI reshapes workplaces, prioritising health & well-being of employees takes centre stage
AI). This technological advancement has innovated business practices and is changing the way we work. Businesses are increasingly turning to AI to solve problems and perform tasks that have traditionally required human intelligence. Across different industries and occupations, AI is being used to detect patterns, make predictions and even create content. However, the rapid rate of AI adoption is putting workplaces at risk of overlooking its potentially adverse impacts, particularly those that could impact the health and well-being of workers.

Venice Film Festival begins with ‘Comandante’. Here’s what happened
Venice Film Festival commenced on Wednesday with the screening of "Comandante," an Italian WWII drama directed by Edoardo De Angelis, highlighting political themes. Despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike in Hollywood, anticipation for this year's festival remained high. In the inaugural press conference, jury president Damien Chazelle and juror Martin McDonagh expressed their support for the ongoing writers' and actors' strikes in Hollywood. They wore shirts and pins displaying «Writers Guild on Strike.» Alberto Barbera, Venice chief, acknowledged the strike's promotional challenges but assured the presence of notable U.S. actors like Adam Driver for «Ferrari,» Cailee Spaeny, Jacob Elordi for Sofia Coppola's «Priscilla,» Caleb Landry Jones for Luc Besson's «Dogman,» and Jessica Chastain for Michel Franco's «Memory.» However, Hollywood stars were absent on the Lido red carpet, where fan excitement centered on jurors Damien Chazelle and Jane Campion. The highlight of the event, led by Italian actor Caterina Murino, was when Charlotte Rampling presented Liliana Cavani with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. Cavani, famed for the 1974 film «The Night Porter,» received the award for her impactful career. Cavani, now 90, also presented her latest film «The Order of Time,» based on Italian physicist Carlo Rovelli's book, in an out-of-competition screening. Italian A-lister Pierfrancesco Favino took the spotlight in «Comandante,» portraying naval commander Salvatore Todaro. The film depicted Todaro's heroic actions during WWII, sinking a Belgian merchant ship and rescuing its crew against orders. The Venice Film Festival will continue until September 9.

Hollywood Writers' Strike: Talks at a standstill with studios; here's what happened
Writers Guild of America (WGA) are still on strike in Hollywood. Several rounds of talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have failed. Here's the update on the talks. The latest round of negotiations came to an uncertain halt on August 22, after the AMPTP went public with its first counteroffer since May 2023, when the strike began and the WGA had made its original proposal. The Hollywood Reporter writes that the proposal was dated August 11 but released on August 22. The AMPTP's counteroffer was trashed by the WGA as something done “not to bargain, but to jam us” and not “nearly enough.” The WGA informed its members on August 24 that it responded with its own counter-proposal on August 15 and further negotiations were held. On August 22, WGA leaders met with AMPTP reps as well as head honchos of Disney, Netflix, NBCUniversal, and Warner Bros. Discovery. AMPTP president Carol Lombardini said the counteroffer “meets the priority concerns the writers have expressed” and hoped the strike would end. The WGA has never released the details of its desired terms and conditions in public since May 2 this year, when the strike started. Studios and Lombardini would like to start talks sooner. The WGA said the offer was like “giving with one hand and taking back with the other”. It said the release of the proposal by the AMPTP was a “tactic in the middle of an ongoing negotiation.”
