CBI headed by an additional director on Wednesday launched an investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at a state-run hospital in West Bengal. The agency has taken custody of the primary suspect, according to officials. The CBI has also registered an FIR in New Delhi under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to the case, a source within the agency revealed.

Indian Medical Association (IMA) are likely to meet the agitating doctors at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata where the body of a woman trainee medico was found last week. IMA national president R V Asokan and its secretary general Anilkumar J Nayak reached the city on Tuesday night. «They may go to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and talk to the junior doctors there,» said an association official. Later, they may meet the parents of the deceased doctor at their Panihati residence, he added.

Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority (IEPFA) will hold outreach programmes in five key cities, introduce a new five-digit code for calls and tweak rules to expedite claim settlements, a senior official told ET. Other planned measures include a revamped interactive voice response system (IVRS) and a call centre. Securities, dividends and debentures that remain unclaimed for more than seven years are transferred by companies to the IEPFA under the corporate affairs ministry. The authority then oversees claim settlements, with the companies playing a key part in verification and other processes.

The CBI has also arrived with a specialised medical and forensic team from Delhi. On Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI investigation into the sexual assault and murder of a woman post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor on August 9.

Health Minister JP Nadda on Tuesday, Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) has called off its strike, which began to protest the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. FORDA's nationwide indefinite strike, which began on August 12, witnessed shutting down of outpatient departments (OPDs), operation theatres, and ward duties, while emergency services continued to operate as usual. The delegation led by the association's President Aviral Mathur, presented its reformulated demands and were assured support by Nadda.

He had a history of physically abusing his wives, and neighbours often reported hearing fights from his home. His first wife was from Behala, his second from Park Circus, his third from Barrackpore, and his fourth from Alipore.

Air India Express has launched six new daily direct flights in a single day, said a press release on Tuesday. The Tata-owned Air India subsidiary airlines will be flying five new routes as a part of this launch which include Guwahati-Jaipur, exclusive to Air India Express. The new flights are operating on the Chennai-Bhubaneswar, Chennai-Bagdogra, Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram, Kolkata-Varanasi, Kolkata-Guwahati, and Guwahati-Jaipur routes. Moreover, to accommodate growing demand on the Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram route, which was previously served by two weekly flights, the airline has now added an extra daily service, increasing the total to nine flights per week. Air India Express now connects Chennai directly to 10 destinations which include Bagdogra, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Thiruvananthapuram domestically, and Dammam, Kuwait, and Singapore internationally.

The consulate in Bombay has a wait time of 422 calendar days, and in Chennai, applicants face the longest wait, which is 477 calendar days.

Following the protests, the Medical Superintendent of RG Kar Hospital Sanjay Basisht has been removed and replaced by Bulbul Mukherjee. One of the accused, a civic volunteer, was arrested and remanded to 14-day police custody. Medical students demanded compensation to the family, judicial inquiry, safety of doctors and the removal of Medical Superintendent, Principal and the head of chest medicine within 12 hours. They demanded that a day to day updated report of the SIT formed by the Kolkata Police be sent to the students' representative. They also sought a written apology from the head of the institution.

They were seen beating each other as they protested in front of the hospital. One accused, a civic volunteer (contract bound police official), was arrested and remanded to 14-day police custody. A woman Post Graduate medical trainee doctor, who was sleeping in a seminar room of the hospital after continuous 36 hours duty, was allegedly raped and murdered early morning on Friday.

Mamata Banerjee on Saturday vowed to seek death penalty for the accused in the brutal sexual assault and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in a state-run hospital. Her announcement came shortly after the accused, who was reportedly an outsider frequenting the hospital premises, was arrested and later remanded to 14-day police custody. In a press release, the IMA stated, «We demand that the authorities act with precision and in time of 48 hours failing which IMA will be constrained to initiate nation wide action. A fair, transparent and time sensitive criminal investigation is in order. An ultimatum of two days is given to arrest culprits otherwise IMA will take nation wide protests.»
