Goa minister Mauvin Godinho on Tuesday said that Pope Francis, head of the Roman Catholic Church, was likely to visit India «sooner than expected». The state transport minister was talking to reporters after attending a religious mass in Old Goa during the ongoing decennial exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier, the patron saint of the coastal state. The feast of St Xavier was being celebrated in Goa on Tuesday.

Gaza, triggered by a Hamas attack on Israel in October last year, and later pulled in Hezbollah too. The ceasefire does not extend to Gaza, where Israel’s military continues to fight Hamas as there is no progress on the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. Narendra Modi on Monday shared a hearty laughter with French President Emmanuel Macron and World Bank President Ajay Banga, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A video posted on Macron’s official X (formerly Twitter) account captured the candid exchange, in which Macron warmly greets PM Modi with a hug, and Banga lightens the mood with a witty remark. In the clip, Banga approaches the two leaders and, turning to PM Modi, jokes: «He [Macron] is going from one Indian to another,» prompting laughter from both Modi and Macron.

Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer held their first bilateral talks on Monday at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The two agreed to strengthening the UK-India ties, with a focus on areas such as technology, green energy, security, and innovation. An important topic that was raised during the talks was the issue of Indian economic offenders residing in the UK, which the Prime Ministers acknowledged as a concern.

BAKU: With no much headway on the critical issue of climate finance at UN climate talks COP29 here, negotiators of 198 countries appear to be looking at any big signal from the G20 summit in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro, where heads of state/government of rich nations and emerging economies are brainstorming on multiple issues, including climate and renewable energy. «We urge them to use the G20 meeting to send a positive signal of their commitment to address the climate crisis. We want them to provide clear mandates to deliver at COP29,» said COP29 president Mukhtar Babayev. At a press conference, he did not mince words while speaking on how important the G20 was for the success of COP29 when the big stake issue of climate finance continues to elude the convergence point among rich and developing countries. «We cannot succeed without them (G20 nations), and the world is waiting to hear from them… They account for 85% of global GDP and 80% of emissions,» said Babayev.

G20 Summit in Brazil on Monday and Tuesday will bring leaders of all major economies together once again. The task before them is cut out. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is representing India for a record eleventh successive time. Such continuity is an advantage in a world of turmoil...when there is a deficit of global governance. Nothing is more powerful than the force of example. Since the first G20 Summit in 2008, and particularly since 2014, India has been a source of economic stability and growth. India, the fastest growing large economy, has quadrupled its GDP to almost $4 trillion since 2008. It is on track to become the third-largest economy in the next few years.

Starmer's office said on Monday, following a months-long pause in negotiations due to elections in both countries. London will seek a «new strategic partnership» with India as well as deepening co-operation in areas like security, education, technology, and climate change, Starmer's office said after he met his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, at the G20 summit in Brazil. «A new trade deal with India will support jobs and prosperity in the UK,» Starmer, whose Labour Party was elected to power in July, said.
