When a wine tastes like a ‘old sari box’

Apart from sneaky sips from my parent’s wine glasses and surreptitious glugging of Christmas wine offered in church, my real tryst with wine began years ago at a swish wine bar in Mumbai. Millennials of a particular vintage will remember IVY, the very ahead-of-its-time chain of wine bars by Chateau Indage across the country in the noughties, which served Chateau Indage’s own brands and as well as imports from Australia and South Africa.

Myanmar-Thailand earthquake: Are quakes becoming too frequent?
Myanmar and Thailand on Friday has claimed more than a thousand lives so far. Myanmar’s Junta said on Saturday that at least 1,002 people had been killed and 2,376 others injured. The death toll and injuries are expected to rise. In Thailand, at least eight people died in the capital, where a high-rise building under construction collapsed. The devastation caused by the Myanmar-Thailand earthquake, shown in dozens of shocking videos and photos circulating on social media, has caused concerns in India too. India has recorded 159 earthquakes of varying magnitudes from November 2024 to February 2025, with the latest being a magnitude 4.0 in Delhi on February 17, as per a PIB press release. Many people have observed that earthquakes have been occurring more frequently in recent years. While it may seem like earthquakes are becoming more frequent, actual frequency of earthquakes may not have substantially increased. The feeling that earthquakes are becoming common could be due to more earthquakes being recorded and a heightened awareness of natural disasters due to social media. However, human activities like mining, dam building, and groundwater extraction can trigger earthquakes, leading to an increase in the number of human-induced earthquakes.

Simultaneous polls' push a bid to deprive people of 'other' religions from voting rights: Sena (UBT)
simultaneous polls, claiming polling will be eventually conducted by excluding people from «other» religions from the voters list under the guise of electoral reforms. An editorial in the Shiv Sena (UBT) mouthpiece Saamana claimed the BJP wants only one party to survive in the country and that the «one party one election» is its ultimate goal. Referring to Donald Trump, the editorial stated that while the US President wants to stop Latinos, black Americans, and immigrants from voting, similarly, in India polling will be conducted by excluding people from «other» religions from the voters' list and this will be labelled as election reform. It also pointed to the executive action signed by Trump on Tuesday to overhaul elections. The order makes the documentary proof of citizenship necessary for registration to vote in federal elections and demands that all ballots be received by Election Day. «India is the world's largest democracy, and the US is the strongest democracy. However, it is evident that the roots of democracy are so weak. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have no faith in democracy and the freedom of expression,» the Shiv Sena (UBT) said.

India could benefit from reciprocal tariffs even as world fears Trump tariff threats. 3 reasons why
reciprocal tariffs, which will likely be announced by US President Donald Trump on April 2, India could see a minimal macro impact or even benefit from the fresh salvo, provided it plays the cards rightly. Before moving on to how India could gain from the tariffs, we should acknowledge that there will be some impact, albeit indirect and minimal. India’s exports would feel the pinch if global trade and growth slow down amid rising trade tensions. However, there is near consensus that this event will most likely be transient unless it evolves into a full-scale trade recalibration.

BJP's Muraleedharan urges Kerala govt to enforce new law to curb illegal migration
BJP leader V Muraleedharan on Saturday called on the Kerala government to strictly enforce the newly passed legislation aimed at curbing the influx of illegal migrants in the state. Addressing reporters here, he said a large number of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh are arriving in Kerala under the guise of guest workers, and stressed that the law should be implemented in the state without fail. The Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025 was passed by the Lok Sabha on Thursday, with Home Minister Amit Shah asserting that those who come to India for business, education and investment are welcome, but those who pose a threat to security will face stringent action. Muraleedharan also claimed that these illegal immigrants, posing as guest workers, are involved in the spread of narcotics in the state. «So, it is essential to implement the new law for the peaceful life and safety of ordinary people here,» he said. Criticising the Congress-led UDF over the matter, the former union minister alleged that the opposition front's approach in this regard is «disappointing».

No hiding place when it comes to facing India: England's Joe Root
Joe Root has advocated for consistency to counter India in the upcoming five-Test series, saying «there's no hiding place» when it comes to facing such an indomitable opponent. India will commence their their 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle in England with the opening match scheduled at Headingley from June 20. Root, who surpassed Alastair Cook as England's all-time highest Test run-getter last year, is gearing up for the challenge following an impressive showing in the Champions Trophy recently. «We are good in our own conditions but with India coming over for a five-match series there's no hiding place. It's a long old slog, you've got to be consistent. You've got to put in those match-winning performances time and time again,» the former England skipper told Sky Sports. Root, 34, led the England Test team from 2017 to 2022, recording 27 victories in 64 matches — the most by any captain from the country. However, a difficult period in 2021, where the team won just one of 17 matches and suffered an Ashes debacle Down Under, led to his decision to step down from the role.
