Tata Motors to accelerate maintenance shutdown amid rising stockpiles, declining sales
Tata Motors is set to advance the annual maintenance shutdown of its passenger vehicle plants due to mounting stockpiles-equivalent to up to two months of sales-amid slowing sales across its petrol, CNG and electric cars, multiple people aware of the company's plans said. This is to align production with demand and correct the stock before the calendar year ends, they said. Typically, auto companies take annual maintenance shutdowns in December to correct stock levels of the ongoing calendar year and make way for the new calendar year models. Tata Motors would be the first passenger vehicle maker to pare output amid slowing sales this year, people cited above said. Other automakers are likely to take a call on paring their output post the festive season, they added. After a scorching pace of growth for three years, passenger vehicle sales in India hit the slow lane this year. Sales are estimated to have declined in September over the year-ago period, marking a third consecutive month of decline.

Tata Sons tells Air India to maintain Vistara's 'superior' flying experience
Tata Sons, the owner of Air India, has urged the carrier's management to proceed cautiously with the airline's ongoing merger with Vistara to avoid alienating the latter's loyal customer base. The merger is due to take effect November 12. The seamless integration of both the brands and continuity of Vistara's service standards for all its consumers unaware of the integration of the Tata Group's aviation business was a key point during an Air India meeting last Thursday. «There is this huge quality expectation from consumers after the Tatas acquired Air India. Vistara was always seen as offering superior brand experience to Air India and after the merger, Vistara consumers should not feel dissatisfied ,» said an official close to the matter. «Vistara employees have also been edgy about merging into the Air India system. Hence, there is this anxiousness that it should be a seamless merger that has no impact on the ground for consumers.»

India must pivot to a new set of economic & trade policies that values human beings
economic policy framework for the next generation of reforms. That is a sensible move. India has compelling reasons to move away from a textbook framework of open economy macroeconomics. It strives for strategic autonomy in a geopolitically riven world, in which one superpower sits astride the northern border, has built supercharged industrial muscle that can smother Indian industry, and casts a covetous eye on Indian territory. India can find ready support, vis-a-vis China, in the US. However, if the US finds that India is reliant solely on American support, it would have it where China has Pakistan — by the scruff of the neck. India would have to give up all dreams of strategic autonomy.

India working to reform World Bank: Lawrence Summers
artificial intelligence (AI) and technological advancements, American economist Lawrence H Summers said while cautioning against leaving technology unchecked. Speaking at the diamond jubilee event of the Delhi School of Economics, Summers highlighted how technological changes are poised to dominate economic history in the coming decades. «There's a chance we may be headed for another kind of transformative change with the spread of artificial general intelligence,» Summers said, describing AI as «the first technology that is, in a profound sense, self-improving». Unlike previous innovations like electricity or fire, which required human input for improvements, AI has potential to enhance itself and lead to exponential advancements, he observed.

Policy needs diversity
India has made a significant shift from a governor-centric decision-making model to a more collaborative approach via MPC, mirroring global trends since the late 1990s. Based on Urjit Patel committee's recommendation, MPC was formed in 2016. It has three internal members from RBI and three external members from academia. This collegial structure, while intended to foster balanced decision-making, has revealed an interesting dynamic: discord among committee members. As seen, external MPC members often vary from the majority's stand on policy rates, raising questions about the efficacy of this governance model. Studies in policy communications of central banks, however, have often emphasised the need to preserve and nurture an environment conducive to such frictions in a committee-based deliberative decision-making framework.

E-comm deep discounting creating grey mkt, leading to loss to national exchequer: CAIT, AIMRA
e-commerce companies Flipkart and Amazon as they are engaging in predatory pricing and are burning cash to offer heavy discounts on products, traders' body CAIT and mainline mobile retailers' association AIMRA said on Tuesday. These practices, in turn, are creating a grey market of mobile phones, causing losses to the exchequer «as players in the grey market evade taxes», they said. Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), in collaboration with the All India Mobile Retailers' Association (AIMRA), placed the demands in a white paper on the impact of e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart on India's retail ecosystem. AIMRA demanded suspension of operations of Chinese mobile phone companies OnePlus, iQOO, and Poco for allegedly colluding with e-commerce players.

India communicating between Russia and Ukraine: Jaishankar
The minister was asked about India's role in dealing with Russia and Ukraine. «Our public position is that we do not believe that differences or disputes between countries can be settled by war. A second public position is we do not believe that we are actually from the battlefield going to get a decisive outcome. Three is if you're not going to get a decisive outcome, at some point, in some form, there has to be a negotiation.

Tensions with China will continue until forward deployments are addressed: EAM S Jaishankar
He made these remarks at an event hosted by Carnegie Endowment in the US. India and China have been engaged in a territorial face-off since 2020 after the Chinese Army transgressed into multiple areas from the Galwan valley to the Finger area along the Pangong lake. Speaking about ties between India and China, he said, «In terms of our own relationship with China, I think it's a long story, but the short version is that we have agreements on how to keep the border peaceful and tranquil, and those agreements were violated by China in 2020. And some of the...because we have forward deployments of our militaries, there are resultant tensions. And until those forward deployments are addressed the tensions would continue. If the tensions continue, it casts a natural shadow over the rest of the relationship. So our relationship hasn't been built for the last four years.»

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) is a key institution in implementing the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). According to Sudhakar, banks and other financial institutions file petitions containing 20-30 volumes of documents, and there are also innumerable agreements. "… the interpretation of these documents is a legal argument… please don't imagine that NCLT can do some magic by saying admit debt and default… we can't," he said in the context of delays in admitting cases under the IBC.
