Like-minded nations collaborating with India to make it a chip manufacturing hub: Krishnan
semiconductor manufacturing destination, a top Electronics and IT ministry official said on Sunday. In an interview with PTI, Ministry of Electronics and IT Secretary S Krishnan said pilot facilities of US storage semiconductor maker Micron and Tata Electronics have already rolled out chips, and their main plants in Gujarat will begin to produce made-in-India chips from the later part of 2025. «Globally, and thanks to geopolitical circumstances, there is an increasing realisation that semiconductors are a very important and strategic commodity, and therefore, we need substantial resilience in the production of semiconductors,» Krishnan said. The importance of resilience in semiconductors was underlined during the pandemic when many industries — including the auto industries, medical devices industries and other electronics, and consumer electronics industries — suffered because they did not have access to chips, which led to a belief that there should be greater diversification, especially for sourcing of semiconductors, he added.

Pension alert: Even the unified scheme could acquire a sell-by date over time
shorturl.at/8Ze9p) has pointed out that during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP’s share of postal ballots in these four states had reduced from its 2019 level, providing some indication of displeasure with the pension system. Postal ballots are mostly cast by senior citizens, persons with disabilities, government officials either on poll duty or serving in locations removed from their constituencies, consular staff in overseas locations and defence personnel. The sharp reduction in the share of postal ballots must have given the BJP think-tank a reason to pause and reconsider its considered stand on pension.

Manu Joseph: Why Indian cities may be doomed to remain unliveable
As an Indian, my standards are so low that my idea of exciting urban development is a Nitin Gadkari tweet. I enjoy reading the plans of the minister for road transport and highways—his great projects, how he would punish Indians who don’t follow the law (this part especially), how he hopes to replace vehicular horns with the sound of Indian musical instruments, and how very soon road travel from Chennai to Bangalore would take only two hours. I did try to point out to him on X that right now Bangalore to Bangalore is two hours.

Festivals of seeds and the rains of love
rains are sometimes called moga pavs in Goa. Literally this means “rains of love”, but my farmer friend explained an additional agricultural connection: “It is a very soothing and calm rain for plants and even humans.” June-July rains have damaging intensity, but these later showers embrace the plants. With moist soil and spells of bright sun, it is the perfect time to plant vegetable and fruit seeds. Rice for the kharif crop is planted earlier, since it flourishes in flooded fields, but now the shoots are vivid green, a reminder that this is a growing season. The festivals in this season celebrate growth. Rishi Panchami, which is today, is marked in Western India with a dish made of seasonal leaves and vegetables like those the sages might have foraged from jungles. Onam has its carpet made with freshly plucked flower petals and leaves. Ganesh Chaturthi in Goa has the matoli tradition — where a canopy of seasonal fruits and leaves, many gathered from the wild, is suspended over the Ganesh idol.

SEBI has a lot to explain: Congress after Mauritius FPIs 'challenge'
Congress on Sunday said the SEBI investigation into «the Adani Group's brazen attempt» to bypass regulations is still languishing and the capital markets regulator has a lot to explain. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh's remarks attacking SEBI came after a media report which claimed that two Mauritius-based foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), who were mentioned in the January 2023 report on the Adani Group by short-seller Hindenburg Research, have petitioned the Securities Appellate Tribunal, seeking urgent relief from complying with SEBI's new foreign investor norms. «Two Mauritius-based foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), a part of the revelations in the still-unfolding Modani mega scam, have now petitioned the Securities Appellate Tribunal, seeking urgent relief from complying with SEBI's new foreign investor norms before the upcoming September 9th deadline,» Ramesh said. Both the FPIs are alleged to be violating rules that require investors to not be over-invested in a single stock, he said.
