Paris Paralympics: Can Harvinder Singh’s gold lift archery in India?
Neeraj Chopra moment in Tokyo that changed the face of javelin in India and inspired many to take up the sport. Harvinder Singh’s gold medal in para archery in the men’s individual recurve open event on Wednesday has similar potential. For a long time, the Olympics or Paralympics, archery has been about heartbreaks and missed opportunities. It was Limba Ram in 1992, Deepika Kumari in 2012 and Dhiraj Bommadevara in 2024. Bommadevara shot well but still missed out on a medal. In a sense, it was becoming a curse. Shoot offs, inner 10s, something or the other would keep happening and the Indians would miss the podium. The jinx was finally broken by Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar when they won bronze in the mixed team event in compound. But they too faced a heartbreak in the semi final losing a shoot off against Iran. A gold medal, which has the ability to transform a sport, continued to be elusive.

The Telegram chief’s arrest shouldn’t lead us down a faulty policy path
A lot has happened since Pavel Durov, the billionaire Russian-born Emirati businessman who founded the popular social media and messaging app Telegram, was arrested in France last week. Durov, who has four passports, including one from France, received support from voices across the ideological spectrum, from the far right to the progressive left. Russian media predictably labelled the arrest a Western conspiracy.

Iran probe finds Raisi helicopter crash caused by weather
Iran's final investigation into the May helicopter crash that killed president Ebrahim Raisi has found it was caused by bad weather, the body investigating the case said Sunday. The helicopter carrying 63-year-old Raisi and his entourage came down on a fog-shrouded mountainside in northern Iran, killing the president and seven others, and triggering snap elections. The main cause of the helicopter crash was the «complex climatic and atmospheric conditions of the region in the spring», the special board investigating the dimensions and causes of the helicopter accident said, according to state broadcaster IRIB.

Nuclear weapons stopped invasions. Then Ukrainian troops poured into Russia.
Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk isn’t just a brash bid to upend Russia’s invasion. It also marks the first time that a declared nuclear power has faced invasion and occupation by another country. For decades, nuclear-escalation theory has presumed that countries with atomic weapons were largely immune from attack because an aggressor risked triggering armageddon.

Fears of all-out regional war deepen after Israel, Hezbollah exchange heavy fire
Israel launched a series of airstrikes across southern Lebanon in the early hours of August 25, targeting Hezbollah in what it described as a pre-emptive strike. In response, militant group Hezbollah claimed to have launched hundreds of rockets and drones to avenge the killing of one of its top commanders the previous month. This heavy exchange of fire deepened tension that a big conflict could soon begin that could involve the US, Iran and a number of militant groups in the region. By mid-morning, the exchange of attacks appeared to have ended, with both sides stating that they had focused their strikes on military targets. However, the situation remained tense, and the full extent of the casualties and damage was not immediately known. At least three people were reported killed in the strikes on Lebanon.

Yahya Sinwar: How the New Hamas chief eludes Israel and US might with Osama Bin Laden-like tactics
Yahya Sinwar, the current Hamas chief, to potentially end the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. Sinwar, who took over the leadership after the death of former Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh on July 31, was believed to be hiding in southern Gaza. Special Forces from Israel entered a tunnel in the region with a tip from intelligence agencies, but found the target location deserted except for papers and Israeli currency worth approximately $10 million. Yahya Sinwar, responsible for planning the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 last year, took over the leadership after Haniyeh's death in Iran a month prior. Sinwar, known for his elusive nature, has repeatedly evaded capture by Israeli forces.
