US presidential election: 'Indian Americans for Harris' grassroots campaign launched
grassroots campaign in support of Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in key battleground states. Vice President Harris, 59, who is of mixed parentage, her mother immigrated to the US from Chennai and her father moved to the country from Jamaica, is up against Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump, 78. The "Indian Americans for Harris" campaign — launched on Tuesday — aims at ensuring that the presidential elections make history by electing Harris as the first person of Indian heritage to lead the US, according to the group's members. «This is the first time we have someone whose mother is from India. She has got Indian heritage and culture. What she has learned, I felt that we Indian Americans should support her beyond the party line,» North Carolina-based businessman Swadesh Chatterjee told PTI.

Her mother's daughter: How Kamala Harris' speech foregrounded her childhood
India has become the flavour of the US presidential elections. For the first time, two Americans of Indian origin, Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy, figured as possible candidates for the presidential elections. When JD Vance became former President Donald Trump's running mate, spotlight fell on his wife Usha Vance, an Indian American and practicing Hindu. With the nomination of Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s candidate for the presidency, once again India has come to foreground. In her speech on Thursday night in which she formally accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidency, Harris spoke at length about her childhood days when she was raised by her mother Shymala Gopalan alone, who had divorced from her Jamaican American husband. What Harris said about her mother Harris started her speech by remembering her mother. «But I’m no stranger to unlikely journeys. So, my mother, our mother, Shyamala Harris, had one of her own. And I miss her every day, and especially right now. And I know she’s looking down smiling. I know that,» she said.

Why do Black Pennsylvania voters think Kamala Harris is not Black? Was Donald Trump right to question her Black identity?
Donald Trump right to say that his political rival Kamala Harris was not a Black woman? This was not the first time that the daughter of a Jamaican father and an Indian mother had faced such a racial question. But a White Republican candidate must raise this question about the presumptive Democrat candidate just before the US Presidential Election 2024. However, the question of Black identity took a new twist when some Black male voters in Pennsylvania said that they didn’t consider the vice president to be Black before Trump's comments.

Hurricane Beryl strikes Jamaica as Caymans, Mexico brace for storm's impact
Hurricane Beryl thrashed Jamaica with heavy winds and rain on Wednesday, killing at least one person after forging a destructive, water-soaked path across smaller Caribbean islands over the past couple days. The death toll from the powerful Category 4 hurricane climbed to at least 10, but it is widely expected to rise further as communications come back online across drenched islands damaged by flooding and deadly winds. In Jamaica, Beryl's eyewall skirted the island's southern coast, pummeling communities as emergency groups rushed to evacuate people from flood-prone areas.
