markets Citi Aviat economy RAI track travelers Flying, walking, watching: Track the anthropologist's (carbon) footprint
The shortest flight I ever took was from Tongatapu, capital of Tonga, to 'Eua, an island some 40 km farther away. On paper, the ferry takes 1.5 hrs. But its schedule is unreliable, the sea unruly, locals advise against it, and the black diesel smoke enough to make one nauseous. The longest flight we were on took us from Qatar to New Zealand, though fortunately, this was in a luxurious Qatar Airways Qsuite. Flying business class does account for three times more CO2 than roughing it in economy though.

Last year, the United States had made the release of part of this annual aid conditional on progress being made on respecting human rights in Egypt, a country where ruler Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has been accused of suppressing dissent. This year, however, the State Department said Egypt had made «progress» in certain areas of human rights. It also explicitly mentioned Cairo's help in mediating between Israel and Palestinian armed group Hamas on the war in Gaza.

MET Remark President War Hamas pushes back against US, says It wants Gaza ceasefire
Hamas said it was «keen» on reaching a cease-fire agreement with Israel, denying what it said were US claims it is stalling negotiations to end the devastating conflict in Gaza. The Palestinian militant group Tuesday said remarks by US President Joe Biden and his top diplomat, Antony Blinken, were «misleading and don't reflect the reality of the movement's position.» The comments came a day after Blinken met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and said the next step toward a truce is for «Hamas to say yes.» Blinken said Netanyahu had accepted a proposal the US is calling a «bridging agreement» to tide the sides over until they iron out the final details. Hamas said the proposal was different from a Biden-led plan unveiled in May, suggesting they are unhappy with Israel's latest demands. The two sides are meant to start a new round of negotiations in Cairo this week, but no date's been set for that yet. Egypt is mediating, along with the US and Qatar.
