They think the Hindus will vote for them but today the Hindus have changed. First they (BJP) sought votes in the name of Ram and now they want to intimidate them,» Abdullah charged. Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan on Saturday held extensive talks with Maldives' Chief of Defence Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy, focusing on a reset of military ties that came under severe strain after President Mohamed Muizzu assumed office in November last. The talks between the two top military officials came a day after India and the Maldives held the fifth round of defence dialogue which decided to expedite implementation of the ongoing defence projects. Officials said the talks were aimed at furthering the bilateral defence cooperation, especially on measures to strengthen regional security and enhance bilateral training opportunities. It is understood that cooperation in the maritime security domain dominated the discussions.

India is set to host the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, early next week as it seeks to cultivate the next generation leadership in the key Gulf state. Sheikh Khaled, the eldest son of UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, has been groomed for leadership through his membership of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and the main national security body since 2016. In 2016, he was appointed head of national security. In January 2017, he was named the deputy national security adviser. In March 2023, he was appointed as the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, which holds the president's post since the creation of the UAE.

labour ministry on Friday urged states to undertake labour reforms and expedite two-way integration of data for unorganised workers with the e-Shram portal for enabling easier access to central social protection and welfare schemes to them. Chairing the second regional meeting with states in Chandigarh, Shobha Karandlaje, minister of state for labour and employment, highlighted the critical need for labour reforms to make India the world’s largest economy by 2047, the ministry said in a statement issued after the meeting. “Our nation should transcend the colonial legacy in the existing labour laws which have originated in the pre-independence era. Therefore, the government has modernized, simplified and harmonized 29 labour laws into four Labour Codes,” she said.

Mumbai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday took on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his apology after a statue of the warrior king Shivaji at Malvan in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district collapsed last month. Gandhi, who was in Sangli for a Congress party programme, said the collapse of the statue was an «insult» to the memory of Chhatrapati Shivaji and that the PM should apologise to every person in Maharashtra for the incident.

BJP leader Anurag Thakur on Wednesday slammed the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh as «anti-people» and said that the financial crisis faced by people was a result of bad policies. The Congress government has money for cars and bungalows for its political appointments, but not for salaries of the state's employee, said Thakur while addressing party functionaries at Samirpur in Hamirpur district during a BJP membership drive here. The BJP's Hamirpur parliamentary constituency in-charge Rajesh Thakur started the membership drive in the district by making Thakur a member. Thakur, a former Union minister, appealed to the people to join the BJP in large numbers. US welcomes any nation that is willing to try to help end the conflict in Ukraine, White House national security communications adviser John Kirby has said. His remarks came after he was asked at a press conference on Wednesday about President Joe Biden's call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the latter's trip to Ukraine that was preceded by his visit to Moscow, and if he thought India could play a role in ending the war. Kirby said, «Any nation that is willing to try to help end this war and do so in keeping with President Zelenskyy's prerogatives, the Ukrainian people's prerogatives, his plan for a just peace, we would certainly welcome a role like that.» On whether he thought India could play a role in bringing peace, the White House official said, «Well, we certainly hope so.»

West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a new bill, the Aparajita Women & Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024, even as the opposition continued their clamour for chief minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation. Law minister Moloy Ghatak introduced the new Bill. «The new bill includes certain amendments and aims to expedite investigation, ensure fast justice delivery and enhanced punishment,» Mamata Banerjee said in the House. Speaking on the bill, which seeks to make amendments in relevant provisions under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012, Mamata Banerjee said, «It was a matter of shame that the Prime Minister could not do what her government did». Demanding the resignation of the PM and the Union home minister, Banerjee said: «I have written two letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and wanted a stringent law on rape but there was no reply from the PM.»

It may be noted that she had opted for superannuation with effect from October 31, 2013," said ICICI bank in the statement. «All the payments made to Ms. Buch post her retirement had accrued to her during her employment phase with the ICICI Group. These payments comprise ESOPs and retiral benefits,» added the bank in the statement.
