CM Siddaramaiah challenges BJP to stage demo against Centre over injustice to Karnataka
fuel price hike, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday challenged the party to organise demonstrations against the Centre over «injustice» to the State. Petrol prices have gone up by Rs three per litre and diesel by Rs 3.5 per litre following the Karnataka government's decision to increase the sales tax on them on Saturday. The Chief Minister alleged that the State faced injustice by the BJP-led NDA government in its share of central funds and GST devolution and in matters relating to release of funds for State projects and dared the BJP to hold protests over this. Siddaramaiah said the crude oil prices were ruling at USD 113 per barrel at some stage during the tenure of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but presently, it is at USD 82.35. In 2015, the crude oil price was USD 52 per barrel, which decreased further in the next year, he claimed.

Amid rising terror attacks in J&K, government increases armed forces, but will it be enough?
Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch, where even the bustling marketplace is not immune to the specter of terrorism. Hidden within the green forest cover of the Pir Panjal region are highly trained Pakistani terrorists, presenting a significant challenge to security forces. Despite intensified patrolling following a recent surge in terrorist attacks, searching these dense forests remains a daunting task. Resurgence of Terrorism After an 18-year hiatus, terrorism has resurfaced in Poonch and Rajouri, with the first major attack on the army occurring in the forests of Surankote in October 2021. This resurgence has disrupted security calculations for Jammu and Kashmir, exacerbated by the abrogation of Article 370, which granted the region special status under the Constitution.

Who will be the next Lok Sabha Speaker? Uncertainty looms over key post amid INDIA bloc's demands
BJP falling short of majority by 32 seats, an uncertainty persists over who the ruling (NDA) alliance’s candidate will be. The Opposition INDIA bloc have demanded that the position goes to NDA allies including the Janata Dal (United) and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). This has led to a difference in opinions within the saffron party-led coalition, as per a TOI report. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP secured 240 seats, falling short of a majority by 32 seats. However, with 16 seats won by N Chandrababu Naidu's TDP and 12 by Nitish Kumar's JD(U), these allies became crucial in forming the government at the Centre. Does the future of South Asian cuisine lie in the Middle East
Sri Lankan community in New York City probably gravitated to Staten Island, just below Manhattan because of cheaper rents, but there might be other reasons why the place feels familiar. One of the best ways to get a good meal in New York is to board the Staten Island ferry. It’s free, you pass the Statue of Liberty and at the other end are a bunch of great Sri Lankan restaurants. You can savour their curries with their distinctive deeply roasted spices and the underlying umami note from the grated dried tuna called Maldi fish, enjoy the hoppers (appams) and rich coconut rice and finish with one of the best desserts ever, thick yoghurt with kithul (fishtail palm syrup). And you can wonder why Staten Island has more Sri Lankan restaurants than all of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third swearing-in saw heads of neighbouring South Asian countries appear as guests. It might have been more meaningful without the one obvious omission, but it still seemed a gesture towards something that has almost vanished — the idea of South Asia beyond just how the countries affect each other on a political level. There are links of history, geography, cultural exchange, personal histories, environmental connections and, yes, food that also count in the South Asian space.

More interest now in pocket version of Constitution, courtesy Rahul Gandhi
Rahul Gandhi during the Lok Sabha elections has a deep Lucknow connection thanks to its publishers, who first printed it in 2009. And if publishers Eastern Book Company are to be believed, people have started showing more interest in the coat pocket edition of the Constitution after Gandhi pulled it out on several occasions during the campaign. Sumeet Malik, one of the directors of the Eastern Book Company, told PTI that the idea of printing a court pocket edition came from Supreme Court advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, who suggested that they should publish a version that fits easily in the lawyers' court pockets. «The first edition was launched in 2009 and there have been about 16 editions of this book, which have been published so far. And over the years, these copies have been purchased by many lawyers and judges, and also given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Ram Nath Kovind when he became the President of India,» said Malik.

This is not Modi's victory, but his defeat: MK Stalin targets PM on Lok Sabha results
DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin claimed that the Lok Sabha results were Prime Minister Narendra Modi's «defeat» and he became the PM because of the support of TDP's Chandrababu Naidu and JDU's Nitish Kumar. While addressing a public meeting in Coimbatore on Saturday, the Tamil Nadu CM also targeted the BJP over its slogan of 'Abki Baar, 400 Paar', saying, «Despite a lot of efforts, the BJP got only 240 seats.» «This is not Modi's victory, but Modi's defeat. Modi is the Prime Minister because of Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar. If they had not supported it, where would Modi have gotten the majority from?
