Tata Steel UK plant workers vote for strike action
Tata Steel workers based at two plants in Wales voted in favour of industrial action on Thursday over the company's plan to close its blast furnaces and shed 2,800 jobs. The Mumbai-headquartered steel major said it was «disappointed» over the move while consultation continues and pointed to «significant irregularities» in the ballot process in favour of strikes. While the company says its restructuring plans were important to sustain the business as it transforms to new electric technology, Unite the Union said its workers from the Port Talbot and Newport Llanwern plants had voted against the «disastrous» plans because they did not agree with the approach. «We are naturally disappointed that while consultation continues, Unite Union members at Port Talbot and Llanwern have indicated that they would be prepared to take industrial action up to and including strike action if an agreement cannot be reached on a way forward for the business and its employees,» a Tata Steel spokesperson said.

Higher salary threshold for UK Family Visa comes into force
GBP 29,000, up from GBP 18,600. By early next year, this will have increased two more times to match the Skilled Worker visa salary threshold of GBP 38,700. The UK Home Office said it marks the final measure in Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Home Secretary James Cleverly's package to reduce legal migration and «ensure those arriving here do not burden the taxpayer». «We have reached a tipping point with mass migration. There is no simple solution or easy decision which cuts numbers to levels acceptable to the British people,» said Cleverly.

We are not kids: Virat Kohli on hugs with Gambhir, Naveen-ul-Haq
RCB) batsman and star India batter Virat Kohli has slammed the trolls who were 'dissapointed' after seeing him hugging Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq and former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir. «Log bohot disappointed hog aye hain mere behavior se. Naveen ke saath maine jhappi daal li, us din Gauti bhai ne aake mereko jhappi daal di. Matlab, tumhara masala khatam ho gaya to boohoo kar rahe ho. Abey bache thodi na hain yaar (People are very disappointed with my behavior. I hugged Naveen, and then the other day Gauti bhai [Gautam Gambhir] hugged me. Now that they don't have anything juicy, they've started booing. We are not kids!),» said Virat. The row between Kohli and Gambhir started in 2023 when during an intense match between RCB and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). During the match Kohli had an intense argument with Naveen-ul-Haq and Amit Mishra. The exchanges spilled over and Kohli found himself in a heated exchange with LSG opener Kyle Mayers, prompting Gambhir (then LSG mentor) to intervene. This action appeared to provoke Kohli, leading to a fiery exchange between Gambhir and Kohli. The confrontation reached its peak as both men exchanged heated words, with teammates attempting to mediate.

Who are the 'vote-eating' Corbett leopards? The reason behind Uttarakhand's election dilemma
Uttarakhand's serene surroundings of Nainital and Pauri districts, villagers near the Corbett Tiger Reserve are dealing with the challenges of human-animal conflict. In the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on April 19 in Garhwal (Pauri Garhwal) and Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar, one of the major issues is the conflict between humans and big cats. The BJP won both seats in 2019. As the polls approach again, voters are faced with a decision: to boycott or to vote? While some consider boycotting, others are considering the 'None Of The Above (NOTA)' option. The frustration has grown due to what villagers perceive as a lack of government intervention. «Villagers are not inclined to vote for any candidate. Neither our MP nor any MLA has paid attention to our plight,» convener of Sanyukt Sangharsh Committee, Lalit Upreti told TOI.

Red Sea Crisis: RBI and IRDAI asked to help limit impact on exports
Red Sea due to Houthi attacks on cargo ships. In a letter, which was also addressed to state-run export finance institution Exim Bank, the finance ministry last month told the RBI and Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) to monitor and look into the concerns raised by exporters with the commerce ministry about these disruptions potentially inflating India's export costs, officials said. «After our deliberations with the commerce ministry and other stakeholders, including exporters, it was decided that sectoral regulators will keep a watch and take necessary action wherever possible,» a government official said. Banks have also been briefed separately to factor in such hikes while sanctioning fresh credit limits to exporters and other businesses, the official said.

Natural gas should come under GST regime, says GAIL chairman Sandeep Kumar Gupta
natural gas in the energy mix to 15% by 2030, said GAIL chairman Sandeep Kumar Gupta. In an interview to ET's Sanjeev Choudhary, the former finance chief of Indian Oil Corporation, who took over as the chief of India's largest gas marketer and transporter in 2022, said the government should mandate the use of natural gas in refineries and steel making, and make emissions a factor in the merit order for electricity despatch to help gas-based power compete with coal-based supply. He also said natural gas should come under the goods and services tax (GST) regime, production-linked incentive (PLI) should be extended to LNG-powered vehicles and GST on CNG-powered vehicles should be slashed to 5% from 28%, on a par with electric vehicles (EVs). Edited excerpts: How does the global gas market look? The global gas market is well supplied and there is no concern about LNG prices. The OPEC+'s arbitrary production cuts, however, have an impact on LNG prices that are linked to crude oil. The situation can correct if the producer group reviewed its decision and took responsible action.

Eid mubarak
Felt even by us sitting in comfortable homes — what to say of the faithful who toil in the sun. Every evening, when the first drops of water trickle down your throat and you bite into a date, is a celebration of life, of gratitude to the Maker for His infinite blessings. After 30 days, the month of Ramzan culminates today in Eid-ul-Fitr, the festival of breaking the fast. The holy book was revealed in this month. So, the faithful would have read the Quran with greater reverence. After all, the first command and word of the Quran is, 'Read, in the name of your Lord who created.' Tadabbur is what it is known, as we contemplated its relevance in our lives. Thirty days when we sought to develop Taqwa, God Consciousness, which inspires us to be on guard against wrong actions. Eid is a day of celebration, of remembering the lesser fortunate, a day by when you discharge the religious obligation of giving a certain portion of your wealth to the poor and needy in charity. Known as Zakat, it does what it literally means — purifies your wealth.
