Fool’s gold: Our Olympics medal haul held up a mirror to the country
A few grams of gold can elevate or depress a nation’s morale and stature. But first; why should any nation spend money on sports, especially one whose population substantially relies on subsidies? Nations invest in sports for three strategic reasons. The first is global positioning.

View: Medals tally with nations?
Olympics reading the US, China, Japan, Australia, France, the Netherlands, Britain, South Korea, Italy and Germany, one is bound to ask: why do some countries fare better than others? Discussions usually attribute wins and losses to individual abilities, training and dedication. These factors are undoubtedly crucial. But there could be other determinants like economic prosperity. In each of the last three Summer and Winter Olympic Games, the top 10 medal-winning countries have been high-income countries based on World Bank's income-level classifications, with the exception of China (upper-middle income) in Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and OAR (Olympic Athletes from Russia — upper-middle income) in PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics. However, research has found a range of determinants beyond economic prosperity — team size, growth rate, expenditure on health, population, etc — to have a significant impact. We investigated the association between the total medal count for each country at the Beijing 2022 Olympics and their GDP per capita (PPP). A moderate positive relationship is observed with a correlation coefficient of 0.62.

Indian athletes step up fight against publicity rights violations by brands
Olympics athletes are stepping up their fight against advertisers indulging in unauthorised use of their name, image, or likeness for commercial purposes, following in the footsteps of their cricket counterparts. Sports marketing agencies Baseline Ventures and IOS Sports have issued legal notices to brands on behalf of PR Sreejesh and Manu Bhaker, respectively, for using their image or name in their marketing campaigns without prior permission of the athletes, or without having any official association with the international or Indian Olympic committees. Sreejesh was part of the Indian hockey team that won the bronze medal while Bhaker created history by winning two bronze medals, one alongside Sarabjot Singh, at the Paris Olympics that concluded on Sunday. «It's high time corporate firms understood the very basics of marketing and usage of IPs, especially firms that are already involved with sports. Our ask is very simple: pay and play,» Baseline Ventures managing director Tuhin Mishra said.

We're India fans, not sports fans (and it's ok)
athletes with awe, to catch a glimpse of citius, altius, forties and all that stuffius. We follow the Olympics to do INDIAAAA-INDIA! And in the process if we catch something that is sportingly wonderful, well, we get lucky, whether we know it or not. Let's face it, despite the once-in-four years suppressed supply-heightened demand coverage, the Olympics as a spectator sporting event isn't as popular in this day and age of multiple fan loyalty as 'viewership' would suggest. In football, for instance, there was a time when the Indian football fan was content following the national team — and his local club, if he was Malayali, Bengali or Punjabi. Other sports that Indian fans followed were hockey and cricket — the former represented almost solely by the national squad, the latter overwhelmingly by the Indian team, and for more serious enthusiasts of the game, by national tournaments like the Ranji Trophy. The nation was pretty much the only side we had to follow.

Too much man! Too much woman! Are you on a Goldilocks quest?!
Taapsee Pannu and Imane Khelif have in common? Answer: the Indian actor and the Algerian boxer have both been targeted by misogynists at the Paris Olympics, although for reasons that are poles apart. Khelif is being humiliated by a global army of trolls — including the most famous troll of all, Harry Potter author JK Rowling — who have been questioning her identity as a woman after a match in which she made short shrift of her Italian opponent. She is a man disguised as a woman, they alleged. Pannu, meanwhile, was criticised after visuals emerged of her lustily cheering Indian badminton players coached by her husband, Mathias Boe. She distracted them, she obstructed spectators' view, she's an attention-seeker, she is a panauti (ill-omen), she is unpatriotic — the list of charges against her on social media was long.

Olympics 2024 Closing Ceremony: Date, time, venue and other details
The organizers have mostly succeeded in highlighting Paris' beauty during the Games. Beach volleyball was played near the famed Eiffel Tower. However, holding events on the filthy Seine River proved more difficult. The closing ceremony is scheduled to begin at 0030 IST (Monday) and continue slightly more than two hours. It will feature typical features such as the athlete parade and the presentation of the Olympic flag to the 2028 Los Angeles Games organizers.
