From too wet to bone dry: Indonesian coffee crop faces El Nino jolt
El Nino's dry weather threatens to further dent coffee production in Indonesia, the world's fourth largest grower, after excessive rains dragged down output to its lowest in more than a decade, driving global prices to all-time highs. Lower coffee output in Indonesia, which mainly produces robusta beans — having a bolder and more bitter flavour than the arabica variety — could trigger more gains in prices which have climbed more than 40% in 2023 and hit a record high in June.

EU Raises Data Privacy Concerns over Proposed G20 MSME Portal
European Union has raised data privacy concerns at the meta information portal that India has proposed for the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) of the G20 countries. The portal is sought to have details of MSMEs of every G20 member including the sectors and products they deal with. Establishing an online digital portal is crucial as it would offer integrated research, trade and business information for market research by the MSMEs. «Some members, including the EU, have raised data privacy concerns. They have asked how will the portal and data be managed,» said an official. Officials said that setting up the MSME portal is one of the three high-ambition goals, an outcome on which is being seen at the upcoming G20 Trade and Investment Ministerial meeting in Jaipur from August 24 to 25.

How to govern the AI industry must be accorded high priority
OpenAI and Google are really worried that their products are dangerous and pose severe, unpredictable risks to public safety, they could stop developing them. It is reasonable, therefore, to suspect that their calls for regulation of so-called foundation models are partly motivated by the desire to lock-in their dominant market positions. Even the narrative of the dangers and risks of generative AI takes us in direction determined by a few big companies in Silicon Valley and the intellectual and media eco-system they have promoted.

Bengal lagging behind under Mamata rule, says BJP chief Nadda; TMC hits back
BJP national president JP Nadda on Sunday said West Bengal, once a cradle of the country's renaissance, is now lagging behind because of TMC misrule. Criticising West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for establishing a «jungle raj» in the state, Nadda said she should stop behaving like a «champion of democracy» nationwide. «West Bengal was once the cradle of the renaissance of the entire nation. It was Bengal which showed the path to the entire nation. But in the last few decades, Bengal has been lagging behind. After years of misrule by the Left regime and then by the TMC, Bengal now tops the charts in crime against women, corruption, and unemployment,» he said at a party programme here. «Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking the country forward and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is taking the state backwards. The misrule of the TMC has led to Bengal lagging by several years,» he said. Nadda said the «jungle raj» is going on in the state under the TMC regime.
