Iraqi parliament elects Sunni lawmaker al-Mashhadani as speaker, breaking deadlock
Sunni lawmaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani as its speaker, lawmakers said, breaking a nearly year-long deadlock over the position that had remained vacant due to protracted disagreements among political factions. The stalemate followed a decision by the Federal Supreme Court last November which upended the career of former speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, Iraq's most powerful Sunni Muslim politician and set the stage for a fight over succession. Mashhadani, who previously served as parliament speaker from 2006 to 2008, was elected to the post again with significant support from the coalition that includes influential Shi'ite parties and Iran-aligned groups along with the State of Law coalition, which is led by former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

Trump sues CBS over Kamala Harris '60 Minutes' interview; seeks $10 bn in damages
Donald Trump sued CBS on Thursday over an interview of his Democratic rival Kamala Harris aired on its «60 Minutes» news program in early October that the lawsuit alleged was misleading, according to a court filing. The complaint, filed in federal court in the Northern District of Texas, alleges the network aired two different responses from Harris responding to a question about the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The version that aired during the «60 Minutes» program on Oct. 6 did not include what the lawsuit calls a «word salad» response from Harris about the Biden administration's influence on Israel's conduct of the war.

Amazon denies duping US consumers over Alexa's recording practices
Amazon.com has asked a U.S. judge to throw out a multibillion-dollar consumer lawsuit that claims the tech company's cloud-based voice service Alexa illegally collected and recorded private conversations without consent. Amazon said in a federal court filing on Wednesday in Seattle that the consumers had failed after years of litigation to show it engaged in unfair or deceptive practices. Amazon asked U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik to rule for the company on the merits of the plaintiffs' claims, which would end the case before a trial.

Russian court fines Google $20 decillion for blocking pro-Kremlin media outlets, fine is worth more than the world’s GDP
Google' clash with Russia is not a very old story, as the tussle keeps reviving over time, and in this instance, a Russian court has surprised everyone by declaring a $20 decillion fine on the tech giants for violating laws, when they blocked pro-Kremlin media outlets. The fine has been compounded with other penalties imposed on Google, after it blocked 17 Russian TV channels as a result of international sanctions. These TV channels were all speaking in favor of the Kremlin, and in support of the Russian aggression on Ukraine, among other things.

The US securities watchdog's mounting legal headaches
Gary Gensler, with knock-on implications for others on his agenda. Here's a list of rules and actions affected, according to legal filings, the SEC's agenda, and legal experts. * Nasdaq corporate board diversity: Conservative group the Alliance for Fair Board Recruitment sued the SEC in the Fifth Circuit after the agency blessed a Nasdaq rule promoting diversity on corporate boards. Gensler recently cited this lawsuit as the reason why he could not discuss progress on a similar SEC planned rule. * Proxy voting: The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals last month sided with the SEC in a case brought by trade associations including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, finding the agency was within its rights to rescind Donald Trump-era regulations on corporate elections.

Sean Diddy to get relief? Judge says lawsuit against US rapper can be dismissed under this condition
“The fundamental question is whether Plaintiff has a ‘substantial privacy’ interest that ‘outweighs the customary and constitutionally-embedded presumption of openness in judicial proceedings,” Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil wrote in an opinion Wednesday, adding, “Defendants have a right to defend themselves, including by investigating Plaintiff, and the people have a right to know who is using their courts.” This means if the woman fails to reveal her identity, the lawsuit filed against Sean 'Diddy' Combs can be dismissed. The woman filed the lawsuit as a Jane Doe against Diddy Combs earlier this month, accusing him of raping her in 2004 when she was just 19 years old.

Centre proposes to lower benchmark price for bauxite
benchmark price of bauxite (source of aluminium and gallium) used for calculating value of estimated resources and premium payable in auctions. According to a Mines Ministry proposal, the current Average Sale Price (ASP) of Bauxite contains a conversion factor of 6.4%. The Mineral Concession Rules, 2016 provide a formula for calculating the ASP for metallurgical grade bauxite on the basis of London Metal Exchange (LME) price of Aluminium. This existing conversion factor was opposed by mining companies which claimed the price arrived by using this metric was too high and approached multiple courts of law, the Ministry said. It has now been proposed to lower the conversion factor for metallurgical grade bauxite to 4.90% after a committee constituted for ASP rationalising submitted its report.

An alleged cheating case was filed against real estate firms Rudra Buildwell Realty Pvt. Ltd, H R Infracity Pvt Ltd., U M Architectures and Contractors Ltd., and Gambhir, who was a director and brand ambassador of the companies' joint venture.

No Hindu-Muslim angle linked to ban on firecrackers in Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday defended ban on firecrackers, saying it is necessary for protecting people from pollution and there is no 'Hindu-Muslim' angle to it. Kejriwal said Diwali is a festival of lights and it should be celebrated by lighting 'diya' and candles instead of bursting firecrackers that cause pollution. «It's not that we are doing any favour to others. We are doing favour to ourselves because ultimately we and our small kids will suffer from the pollution caused (by bursting crackers),» he said in a press conference.
