Winning bet: India Inc players also ace the sports game
sports teams in India saw an up to threefold surge in earnings in 2023-24, with cricket dominating the table, according to the latest filings of their owners such as Reliance Industries, United Spirits, Tata Steel and RPSG Ventures. These companies, which run the sports teams as business ventures through subsidiaries, benefited from a larger central revenue pool of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), showed the filings. The revenue pool mainly comprises money earned by the BCCI from selling the broadcasting rights and a portion of it is shared among the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams. For instance, the total income of Reliance Industries' wholly owned subsidiary Indiawin Sports, which owns the Mumbai Indians cricket team, more than doubled to ₹737 crore in 2023-24 from ₹359 crore in the previous fiscal. The company's net profit was ₹110 crore, compared to a net loss of ₹49 crore in 2022-23. The central rights accounted for three-fourths of the revenue in 2023-24, while nearly 22% came from ticketing sales, said the annual report of Reliance Industries.

Byju Raveendran files caveat before Supreme Court against creditor Glas Trust Company
Byju Raveendran has filed a caveat before the Supreme Court against its US-based creditor Glas Trust Company LLC over the order passed by the insolvency appellate tribunal NCLAT. The caveat was filed before the apex court on August 3, a day after the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) passed an order restoring the board of edtech major after setting aside insolvency proceedings against it. Glas Trust has opposed the Rs 158.9 crore dues settlement with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) alleging the money paid by Riju Raveendran (brother of Byju Raveendran) was tainted and was a case of «round-tripping». Anticipating the US-based creditor would challenge the NCLAT order before the Supreme Court, Byju Raveendran had filed a caveat requesting to be heard before the apex court passes any order on a plea filed by the US-based creditors.

Viacom18, Star India expect to complete merger by October
Viacom18 and Walt Disney-owned Star India are hopeful of completing their merger by October, when the Competition Commission of India (CCI) is also expected to issue its order, officials familiar with the matter told ET. The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has already put the merger scheme between Star and Viacom18 for final disposal. The merger, which was announced on February 28, is expected to receive the NCLT green signal as creditors and shareholders of both companies have approved it. «The biggest barrier to the merger proposal is the CCI approval. Once the competition watchdog approval comes, the merger deal will be more or less concluded. The expectation internally is that the CCI approval might come in October,» said one of the officials tracking the development.
