Ratan Tata said NO to cabin in Mumbai office. Lottery decided it
Ratan Tata, renowned for his humility and clarity, exemplified his down-to-earth leadership even in the smallest decisions. When he was transferred to the Mumbai headquarters of Tata Steel from Jamshedpur in the mid-1960s, an unusual event unfolded. In a moment that highlighted his modesty, Tata refused preferential treatment despite his family legacy. According to Rediff.com, at that time, the Bombay office of Tata Steel was compact, with limited space available for its senior staff. Tata, along with two other executive officers, shared the same designation, yet there was a suggestion that he should have a separate cabin, as he was being moved to the company’s headquarters. Ratan Tata, however, declined the offer unless his colleagues received similar accommodations. He firmly believed that no special treatment should be extended to him because of his last name. Arun Maira, a former colleague and author of The Learning Factory: How The Leaders Of Tata Became Nation Builders, shared this anecdote during an interview. Maira noted how Tata’s simple and fair-minded approach was pivotal in shaping the values of the Tata Group. “He was humble and didn’t want anything different just because he was a Tata,” Maira recalled.

Zomato sends customer the wrong dish, assures her she will 'love it'
Hyderabad received the wrong food order from Zomato and was bizarrely told to «please have it» when she complained. The situation arose when Ananya, a resident of Hyderabad, placed an order for chicken manchurian through Zomato, but the restaurant mistakenly sent her chicken 65 instead. Upon noticing the mix-up, Ananya reported the issue to Zomato and managed to reach out to a customer support agent—no small feat, as many users have found it increasingly difficult to bypass Zomato’s AI chatbot, Zia, for direct assistance. Despite her efforts, the representative, Syeda, could not resolve the problem and simply advised Ananya to accept and eat the incorrect dish. Ananya shared a screenshot of her conversation with the Zomato agent on X (formerly Twitter), where she had written, «I ordered chicken manchurian, not chicken 65.»

India at UN condemns Pakistan's "unsubstantiated allegations" on Jammu-Kashmir, urges to cease human rights abuses
Eldos Mathew Punnoose exercised India's right of reply against Pakistan at the Joint General Debate on decolonization at the United Nations on Monday. Punnoose condemned Pakistan's «unsubstantiated allegations» regarding the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. He emphasised the need for Pakistan to cease its ongoing human rights violations in Pakistan-occupied Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. Targeting Pakistan, he said, «Unsubstantiated allegations by Pakistan largely pertain to the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. India would like to reiterate that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are, were and will be an integral and inalienable part of India. Clearly, Pakistan does not merit a response on the internal affairs of India.»

Canada's Justin Trudeau major controversies: From blackface scandal to holidaying at rich friend's resort
Justin Trudeau's aggression and allegation towards Indian officials in a «murder investigation» has only worsened the already frosty India-Canada ties. Ties between India and Canada have been thorny ever since Justin Trudeau alleged India's involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian Khalistani terrorist, in June 2023. India has repeatedly refuted these claims as «absurd» and «motivated,» accusing Trudeau's government of indulging in vote-bank politics by pandering to pro-Khalistan elements within Canada. Justin Trudeau has experienced a number of scandals and missteps since taking power in November 2015. Amid the growing tensions between India and Canada, let's have a look at the controversies of Justin Trudeau:

Indian govt agents targeting Khalistanis using Bishnoi Group, alleges Canadian Police
Lawrence Bishnoi gang to Indian government agents while alleging “use” of “organised crime elements” to target the pro-Khalistani elements. The accusations comes as the ties between the two nations started deteriorating further with India expelling six Canadian diplomats, hours before Canada’s foreign ministry announced the expulsion of six Indian diplomats. Indian diplomats and consular officials based in Canada leveraged their official positions to engage in clandestine activities, such as collecting information for Indian govt that was used to target members of the South Asian community, alleged Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) that is handling the probe into the Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder case. RCMP had arrested three persons in the Nijjar case in May this year. Canada's Justin Trudeau on the claims said «As the RCMP Commissioner stated earlier, they have clear and compelling evidence that agents of the Government of India have engaged in and continue to engage in activities that pose a significant threat to public safety, including clandestine information gathering techniques, coercive behaviour targeting South Asian Canadians, and involvement in over a dozen threatening and violent acts, including murder.»

A variety of paddy has found centre-stage in Delhi NCR's pollution debate
paddy variety PR-126, developed by Punjab Agricultural University, is at the center of a debate in Punjab. The AAP-led state government supports this variety, but the opposition Congress criticizes it for its lower yield. According to a TOI report, PR-126 has the advantage of reducing farming costs and helping combat air pollution in Delhi-NCR. This variety matures in 123-125 days, compared to the popular Pusa-44 variety's 155-160 days. This shorter growth period saves on irrigation and energy costs, and preserves groundwater. Additionally, it provides farmers with enough time to prepare for the next crop without resorting to stubble burning. However, PR-126 yields 4-5 quintals less per acre than Pusa-44, which produces 35-36 quintals per acre. It also yields 5 kg less rice during milling. This has led Punjab Opposition leader Partap Singh Bajwa to criticize Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for promoting PR-126.

D2C brands see 64% surge in festive orders, outperforming marketplaces: GoKwik
Gokwik. This shift reflects growing shopper confidence and trust in D2C brands making them inert to marketplace sales. Major marketplaces of the Indian eCommerce ecosystem ran their biggest festive sales starting from 25 September all the way till Dussehra. Earlier, D2C brands used to witness a dip in orders during this time, but the wheel has shifted since last year. D2C brands are now also running robust sales parallel to marketplace sales, and continuing to see a surge in order volume.

Congress accuses Punjab's AAP government of colluding with BJP to create farm crisis, destroy economy
Congress party has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government of conspiring with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre to create a crisis around the storage of paddy crops, which could severely impact the state's economy. Tensions between Congress and AAP, already strained after the Haryana election results, have escalated following the new allegations. Leader of Opposition in the Punjab assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, claimed that the Punjab Chief Minister, Bhagwant Mann, misled farmers into sowing hybrid varieties of paddy, which has contributed to the ongoing issues. «I hold Arvind Kejriwal, Mann, and the central government responsible for this crisis, which will also create a law and order situation,» Bajwa said at a press conference in New Delhi. Bajwa highlighted that 185 lakh metric tonnes of paddy are expected to arrive in mandis (grain markets), but godowns in the state are already full due to uncleared stocks. He urged immediate intervention from the Centre, warning of a potential economic fallout.

Supreme Court refuses to stay ongoing polling for Punjab panchayat elections: Here's why
Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay the ongoing panchayat elections in Punjab on grounds of alleged irregularities in the nomination process, saying there will be «chaos» if courts start staying elections on polling day. The polling for panchayats began at 8 AM on Tuesday in Punjab and the petitions, seeking a stay of the ongoing electoral process, were mentioned before a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. «If polling has started today, how can we intervene at this stage? Probably the high court realised the gravity of it and vacated the stay on the elections,» the bench, which also comprised justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, said.

India’s multilingual data must be stored in India to build national AI: Akash Ambani
Indian government must revive its data centre policy to ensure that data of Indian citizens is stored locally, Akash Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Jio Infocomm said. The scale and speed of multilingual data generation in India which will fuel the AI revolution will grow exponentially. We request the government to expedite the updating of the 2020 draft of the Data Centre Policy so that Indian data remains within the geography, he said. “Therefore, any company ready to set up AI and machine learning data centres should get all necessary incentives, including incentives for power consumption,” Ambani said. He was speaking in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the inaugural session of the India Mobile Congress 2024 at Pragati Maidan, Delhi on Tuesday.

IMC 2024: Satcom services need to coexist with terrestrial networks, says Sunil Mittal
Bharti Airtel Chairman Sunil Mittal said today. “Opening up of the space sector to private industry is a big step….but intertemporal choices will have to be made as to how satellite services which are moving fast and technologies need to coexist with terrestrial networks,” Mittal said while speaking during the inaugural of World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA-24) and India Mobile Congress. There are around 5% of people who are in those remote areas, in mountains, in forests where USO is trying to provide the services. With the Satcom services, they will be able to connect on a fast speed network to the internet, he said.

Satellite companies should buy spectrum by paying license fees just like telcos: Bharti Airtel's Mittal
satellite spectrum, telecom tycoon Bharti Airtel's Sunit Mittal on Tuesday while addressing India Mobile Conferrence asserted that satcoms need to buy spectrum the same way telecom operators do along with paying license fees. «Telecom companies around the globe have done seminal work in connecting the world. They will take the satellite services into the remotest parts of the nations through the USO program and directly through themselves. The satellite companies who have ambitions to come into urban areas serving elite retail customers just need to take the telecom licenses like everybody with the same conditions and will have to buy the spectrum and pay license fees as the telecom players,» Mittal said. The issue around satellite spectrum allocation has once again become the point of disagreement between Reliance Jio and other satcom players.
