Defunct iron factory linked to Dalai Lama sees renewed hope of resurrection every election season
Dalai Lama — a man who has no worldly possessions and has eschewed wealth — once owned a factory in a small Indian town, that produced iron. But now, it only produces longing for the people of Hirodih, a small village outside the town of Koderma, in Jharkhand. At the entrance of Hirodih stands Gayday Iron & Steel Company, now corroded and abandoned, was once owned by the Tibetan spiritual leader and Nobel Prize winner. Spanning 350 acres, the plant was set up by the Dalai Lama in the 1960s after he acquired the land from the villagers for Rs 4 crore. Once a major avenue for employment in the region, the factory has been shut for the better part of four decades now. Despite this, the people of the region hold out hope that it will be returned to its former glory.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Nail art & society events, marathons help Jalgaon voter turnout race past 53%
marathons, designer dresses for women, nail art incentives were all used by the Jalgaon district administration along with citizen groups to boost voter turnout in the district which has been historically low. Jalgaon for the past few elections has been hovering around the 46 to 48 percent mark when it came to voter turnout and for several years it has not gone above the 50 percent mark at all. «While rural parts of jalgaon have higher numbers we found that the voting percentage was low middle class and upper middle class. It varied from as low as 19 to 34%t. The affluent class doctors, professionals and industrialists. There was an issue to reach out to them as we don't frequently come into contact with the government as a group, „said Ayush Prasad District Collector, Jalgaon. Prasad then contacted the Rotary clubs, laughter clubs; industrial association groups, social organisations, met their representatives and discussed with them a need to ensure a higher turnout. “Citizens need to vote, they need to be playing their part in the democratic process. For almost two months we along with these groups have organised walkathons, mini marathons and cycle and motorcycle rallies in residential societies and other groups. This was a community bonding exercise where through these activities we focused on why a citizen should vote.» said Prasad.

View: Get a juggler, talk up POK, just don’t let the voter get bored
speeches in the ongoing election has hit rock bottom. Everyone is calling the other one a thief, a criminal, a bad cook, or a dynast. The names of Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani are thrown into every second speech as garnishing. Whether those two billionaires have any political affiliation doesn't matter. They will be brought up regardless. It reminds me of how, in any country, when there is an anti-US demonstration, protesters would throw bricks at KFC outlets. Ambani and Adani are the new KFC for all political parties in this election — even the ones they are supposed to support. You could blame politicians and say they need to improve their intellectual discourse, turn perhaps to the great speeches of Vajpayee, JP, Nehru (oops) and George Fernandes. However, I don't think it is the politicians' fault. They're looking for any trick in the book to entertain crowds. In the age of social media, the public has changed.

Amethi has suffered in last 5 years: Priyanka Gandhi hits out at BJP candidate and MP Smriti Irani
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday attacked BJP's Amethi Lok Sabha seat candidate and sitting MP Smriti Irani, alleging that the region has «suffered» in the last five years as the BJP never thought about its development. She was here to seek support for Congress' candidate from the seat Kishori Lal Sharma, who she said has «dedicated his entire life to Amethi». Priyanka Gandhi, who is a general secretary in the Congress, held a roadshow in Jasi town on the last day of campaigning for the seat that goes to polls on May 20 in the fifth round of the seven-phase general elections. «He (Sharma) has been associated with Amethi for the last 40 years. He was associated with my father (Rajiv Gandhi) here, he also worked with my mother (Sonia Gandhi) and my elder brother Rahul Gandhi. Fifth phase: Campaigning ends for 49 seats; Amethi, Rae Bareli, Baramullah in limelight; WB sees highest security deployment
Campaigning concluded on Saturday for the fifth phase of Lok Sabha polls covering 49 constituencies in six states and two UTs including the high-profile Rae Bareli and Amethi seats from where former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Union Minister Smriti Irani are in the fray respectively. In Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla, former chief minister Omar Abdullah, who is among 22 candidates in the fray, held a roadshow in Soibugh — a central Kashmir village that was once a hotbed of militancy- on the last day of campaigning. While temperatures soared across the country, there was no let up in the campaign heat as the Lok Sabha election season entered the last fortnight. The Election Commission on Tuesday said it expects star campaigners, particularly of the national parties, to lead by example in the remaining three phases of the Lok Sabha polls and not vitiate the delicate fabric of society. With over 40 of these seats with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Prime Minister Narendra and other BJP leaders tried to fend off the challenge posed by the INDIA bloc parties by raising the pitch on issues of appeasement, dynastic politics, Ram temple, Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), corruption and welfare initiatives taken by his government.
