Jitendra Singh versus Lal Singh in Udhampur
BJP leader Jitendra Singh and Lal Singh, who joined Congress recently. The constituency, spread over 18 assembly constituencies and five districts of Jammu, is a tough battle as both candidates have won from this seat twice in their parliamentary career. Jitendra Singh won from here during the 2014 and 2019 elections, while Lal Singh had won during 2004 and 2009 elections. Lal Singh's last minute re-entry into Congress after almost a decade and managing to get the ticket from Udhampur has posed a formidable challenge for Jitendra Singh, who otherwise considered it a cake walk.

Family rival Hanuman Beniwal makes it challenging for turncoat Jyoti Mirdha
Mirdha and Hanuman Beniwal faced each other in Nagaur in 2019, but this time the contest has a twist. The plain-speaking Beniwal, president of the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party, was a part of BJP-led NDA in 2019 who defeated Congress candidate Mirdha. Beniwal, however, walked out of NDA in 2020 over the farm legislations and later vociferously opposed the Agniveer scheme. Considered close to Congress veteran Ashok Gehlot, Beniwal is now an INDIA bloc candidate fighting a tough battle. Mirdha, on the other hand, is now with BJP. Her grandfather Nathuram Mirdha was an influential Congressman who represented the seat six times and was the only MP to be elected from the party in 1977 during the Janata Party wave. Like the rest of Rajasthan, caste is the main factor. The saying goes that when two Jats clash, the community votes for the one who would be more effective in representing the community. «Every community wants their own powerful leader,» Mirdha said, brushing aside the suggestion that her gender was an issue. «Jats are a progressive community. They educate their daughters. I have never felt any less a leader because I am a woman. Also, they have known my family for generations. They know how we have worked for them.»

If you’re among the millions of Americans following the presidential race, then perhaps you can turn your political obsession into a tidy profit by betting on this year’s outcome—or hedge your potential disappointment and bet against your favored candidate. PredictIt.org, a political-futures website that allows participants to wager on political outcomes, on April 1 showed President Biden as a slight favorite over former President Donald Trump in the general election—at 48 cents to 47 cents a share, respectively. Those prices reflect a race that is within the margin of error of many polls.

BSP quite confident and competent this time: Akash Anand
BSP National Co-ordinator and party chief Mayawati’s nephew Akash Anand is virtually leading the party campaign in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as she appears to have taken a back seat. Anand spoke with Rakesh Mohan Chaturvedi on a host of issues. Q: BSP had contested the 2019 general elections in alliance with SP and RLD, winning 10 seats. Why fight alone this time? A: If you look at 2014 and 2019 data, we were hovering around 19% percent. On cutting into Opposition votes, we want to make absolutely clear that when we contest alone we maintain our vote-share but in alliance our partner cuts into our vote-share, helping BJP. We are quite confident and competent this time. Does BSP feel that though it is able to transfer its vote to its pre-poll ally, its partners like SP or RLD do not? Historically, it is very clear that BSP is able to divert its votes to its alliance partner, but the same cannot be said for the other side.

Will BJP's fate change? How Tamil Nadu, other southern states may steer destiny of PM Modi's ‘Abki baar 400 paar’ goal
BJP, whose 2019 poll record resembled an almost wipe-out, hinting at a more assertive north-south divide in case the saffron party returns to power for its third straight term. However, the poll of opinion polls by NDTV says the BJP might be able to bag two seats in Tamil Nadu, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a staggering 10 visits in the past eight weeks. The five southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Telangana, and the union territories of Puducherry and Lakshadweep, constitute India’s most economically prosperous region, according to an Al Jazeera report.
