Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena pushes for 50% Marathi reservation in new Mumbai buildings
assembly elections, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Anil Parab introduced a private member's bill proposing a 50 per cent reservation for Marathi-speaking residents in new Mumbai housing projects. The bill, pending the deputy chairperson's approval, suggests penalties up to Rs 10 lakh and/or six months' jail for developers who don't comply, TOI reported. Shiv Sena (UBT) holds 9 seats in the 78-member legislative council and 15 seats in the 288-member assembly. The opposition coalition, Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), has 75 assembly members and 29 council members, while the ruling Mahayuti alliance controls 212 assembly seats and 28 council seats. The proposed bill may be presented during the monsoon session starting this Thursday. Parab introduced the bill after numerous cases where Marathi-speaking individuals were denied housing due to their food choices or religion. «Discrimination based on such grounds is unconstitutional,» he stated. Parab highlighted a Vile Parle incident where a builder refused to sell homes to Marathi people citing their food habits. Despite protests, government action was lacking, and the builder only apologized after media exposure. Parab emphasized that Marathi speakers are now a minority in Mumbai.

Flipkart explored a deal with Swiggy for a pie of quick commerce
Flipkart explored a potential stake purchase in Swiggy about eight to ten months ago as two of India’s largest consumer internet firms sought to ally amid disruption set off by the rise of quick commerce, investors aware of the matter said. Once the talks fizzled out due to a valuation mismatch, Swiggy filed a confidential draft application in April to list on the public markets, they added. Also present at the negotiations was Prosus—the largest investor in Swiggy with a 33% stake—which was keen to divest some of its holding, the sources said.

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) introduced two new guidelines aimed at enhancing the safety of electric vehicles in the L, M, and N categories. L refers to two-wheelers, while the M and N categories correspond to four-wheelers and goods trucks, respectively. These new sets of rules, called IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024, focus on the main parts of electric cars, buses, and trucks, especially the powertrain (which includes parts like the motor and transmission).

Ethanol: An eco-friendly fuel or another green mirage?
In the early 20th century, Thomas Midgley Jr, a chemist, introduced tetraethyl lead to gasoline, promising to revolutionize the automobile industry by reducing engine knock. It seemed like a miracle solution at the time, and Midgley was hailed as a hero. However, the dark side of this innovation soon became apparent as leaded gasoline caused widespread environmental damage and severe public health issues, including brain damage in children.

We are actually raising the real repo rate: MPC's Jayanth Varma
repo rate, the Monetary Policy Committee is not keeping rates unchanged, but actually raising the real repo rate, which is adjusted for inflation, Jayanth Varma, an external member of the rate-setting panel. Varma, who has expressed concerns about growth sacrifice due to restrictive monetary policy, voted for a 25-basis-point rate cut in the MPC's June policy review. Edited excerpts from the interview with Bhaskar Dutta: The RBI has been placing emphasis on the arduous and slow manner in which inflation is declining to the 4% target. Is the emphasis on reaching 4% and thus keeping rates unchanged a matter of ensuring the credibility of the monetary authority? First of all I think it is important to keep a sharp focus on the real policy rate and not on the nominal repo rate. It is a mistake to think that we are keeping rates unchanged by maintaining the same nominal repo rate; the fact is that, we are actually increasing the real repo rate. Second, there is no reason to worry about credibility at this point of time. Inflation expectations are well anchored, and the inflation targeting regime is working quite well. I do not find any merit in the proposition that an excessively high interest rate is needed to establish the credibility of monetary policy.
