India's wholesale inflation quickens to 2.38% in February from 2.31% in January
wholesale inflation quickened to 2.38 per cent in February on an annual basis, as against 2.31 per cent in January, government data showed on Monday. As per data released by the centre earlier this month, India’s retail inflation eased to a seven-month low of 3.61% in February, down from 4.31% in January. The decline was largely driven by lower food prices, with food inflation—comprising nearly half of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket—falling to 3.75% in February from 5.97% in January. Makhana and machli are a deadly combo: Why fish farming is complementary with growing fox nuts
Pag pag pokhari maach makhan, saras boli muski mukh paan” is a Maithili saying that describes how the land has ponds at almost every step full of fish and the prickly water plants that produce makhana, whose popped seeds are becoming big business. In Greek mythology, Euryale was a Gorgon, a beautiful woman with monstrous features like the snakes for hair of her better-known sister Medusa. When a British botanist came across what looked like a beautiful water lily with menacing spikes on its stalks and leaves, he invoked the Gorgon in its scientific name, adding ferox, or ferocious, for emphasis. Euryale ferox seeds are sometimes called Gorgon nuts. The name was appropriate for another reason. Euryale means ‘far-roaming’ and the prickly plants grow across much of eastern Asia, probably distributed by migratory waterfowl. In 'Soup for the Qan', a translation of a 14th century CE dietary manual for China’s Mongol Emperor, many dishes are made with Euryale seed flour. These are clearly distinguished from the seeds of that other aquatic plant, the lotus, but in time this distinction became blurred. Makhana is often called lotus seed but in Chinese cuisine, actual lotus seeds are now more popular.

Potential in snacks & packed food business, innovating portfolio for Indian taste: PepsiCo
Jagrut Kotecha said. Pepsico will expand its snacks business in India, as consumption is very low vis-a-vis other countries and with growing urbanisation and more money coming in the pockets with a growing economy, Kotecha expects consumption of packed foods to increase. PepsiCo, the makers of Kurkure and Lays, has internally divided India into nine clusters to match the regional taste buds of «multiple Indias», he said, adding «if you say it's just one India, I think we are not doing enough justice to it.» «You need to design your portfolio, keeping those consumers of India like multiple Indias. So that's on being consumer-centric and starting to work and drilling down on that. And then understanding what the trends are in terms of taste, profile, health and wellness,» Kotecha told PTI.

Retailers report 52% drop in essential goods sales due to quick commerce
quick commerce has caused a significant decline in the sale of food, beverages and confectionery in urban centers, as 52 per cent of physical store retailers reported experiencing the drop, according to a report by global consulting firm PwC. The report says that beyond food, personal care (47 per cent) and household cleaning (33 per cent) are also experiencing significant sales reductions. This suggests that quick-delivery models are more disruptive for consumables that consumers frequently purchase in-store.

Amit Shah on Saturday said that during the Congress government in Assam, he was beaten up and had jail's food for seven days in the state. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Shah attacked Congress and said that the Congress did not allow peace in Assam. «I have also been beaten up by the Congress government in Assam. Hiteshwar Saikia was the Chief Minister of Assam and we used to raise slogans against former PM Indira Gandhi that 'Assam ki gaaliyan suni hai, Indira Gandhi khooni hai'. I too had jail food for seven days in Assam and people from all over the country came to save Assam. Today Assam is moving ahead on the path of development,» Shah said. Hiteswar Saikia served as the Chief Minister of Assam for two terms from 1983 to 1985 and then from 1991 to 1996. Bryan Mitchell, Ax-4 mission manager, shared exclusive details about this research, known as ‘Suite Ride’, and other scientific studies that the crew will undertake. Speaking to TOI from Axiom Space headquarters in Houston, Texas, Mitchell explained the significance of these projects. Retail inflation to come below RBI's 4.4% estimates in Jan-Mar quarter at 3.8%: Report
Consumer price index (CPI) or retail inflation is likely to undershoot the Reserve Bank's target in the January-March 2025 quarter, opening more policy space for easing the policy rate, Bank of Baroda said. India's retail inflation significantly improved in February 2025, as the year-on-year Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate stood at 3.61 percent, a decline of 65 basis points from the previous month. The retail inflation print fell below 4 per cent in February for the first time in six months, mainly due to a decline in vegetable prices. «We do not see major risks lurking for food inflation. However, one needs to be vigilant on account of hotter than expected summer, stickier international edible oil prices and risks from global inflationary policies,» said Dipanwita Mazumdar, an economist at Bank of Baroda. As of now, the tide is in favour of a lower headline print emanating from a better Rabi harvest, better supply management strategies of the government, rangebound commodity prices, benign energy price outlook and lesser dependence of the CPI basket in terms of imported commodities.

Holi cheer for now, hope for the best
Retail inflation fell to a 7-mth low of 3.6% in February, driven by falling vegetable prices, official data showed on Wednesday. But the pre-Holi gains are likely to be short-lived with heatwaves predicted in the country as early as March. Vegetables have been the main driver of inflation in the last 12 months, and the correction is set to reverse when winter stocks run down.
