markets Metro trends stage cover reports International Indian consumption sector's defensive shield cracks — can this rare 20% slide unlock an entry point? Motilal Oswal weighs in
consumption sector, traditionally seen as a defensive haven during market volatility, is in the midst of a rare and sharp underperformance — with the Nifty FMCG and Nifty Consumption indices down about 20% and 17% from their September 2024 peaks, respectively. While the sector has lagged the broader market in recent months, Motilal Oswal sees this slump as a selective buying opportunity, driven by an expected demand recovery and easing inflation that could set the stage for a rebound. The consumption sector's underperformance— nearly 900-600 basis points below the Nifty100 — creates compelling entry points in select names, Motilal Oswal said, highlighting Page Industries, Devyani International, Metro Brands, V-Mart, Lemon Tree Hotels, LT Foods, and Cello World as key stock picks with strong fundamentals and growth potential.

German software developer SAP SE unseated Novo as Europe's most valuable public company on Monday. Novo's shares traded down as much as 3.1% in Copenhagen. United Laboratories will retain rights in China for its compound, which works in a similar way to Novo rival Eli Lilly & Co.'s retatrutide — considered the strongest among the next-generation drugs currently in late-stage human trials.

Booking Airlines Boeing reports International Destinations Sporting Fleet could be flat, but the purpose is good: Air India chief Campbell Wilson
Air India Express will take delivery of several narrow-body planes during the year, allowing it to capture strong growth opportunities in the latter half of the year on domestic and short-haul international routes. «Well, our operating fleet is going to be pretty flat this year (FY26), in part because of delays to delivery, but also because we're taking aircraft out of service to do the refit, the Boeing B787s and the B777s in particular. And so, it means that we're actually not able to grow. But it's an investment for a good purpose,» said Wilson. Air India currently has a fleet of 198 planes including 70 inherited from Vistara-the erstwhile full-service joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines. Separately, Air India Express operates 103 aircraft-36 Airbus and 67 Boeing-including 38 new Boeing jetliners from an October 2023 order. Nine more narrow-bodies are slated to join by this June.
