Google search monopoly US case remedies to come by December
Department of Justice plans to issue an outline by December on what Alphabet's Google must do to restore competition after a judge earlier found the company illegally monopolized the market for online search, prosecutors said at a court hearing in Washington on Friday. Prosecutors did not detail what remedy they will propose, but Justice Department attorney David Dahlquist said it should be comprehensive and take into account how Google plans to integrate artificial intelligence into search. Since the case was brought, Google has rebranded its Bard AI product to Gemini, Dahlquist said.

‘Google abused its dominance’: UK regulator slams tech giant for ‘anti-competitive’ practices in ad service business
Google to implement behavioral remedies may not be sufficient to correct the abusive conduct, possibly opening the way for an order against Google to break up its ad tech business from its core services.Separately, the US Department of Justice will face Google in a September trial, calling for the break up of the search giant’s ad tech business over alleged illegal monopolization. The DoJ claims that Google’s dominance over advertising technology allows it to keep at least $0.30 out of every dollar advertisers spend through its online advertising tools.

PIL seeking facilities for cricketers on Mumbai grounds: SC rejects plea against HC order
Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea challenging the Bombay High Court's order which had disposed of a petition seeking directions to provide drinking water and other facilities to cricket players during practice or unofficial matches on public grounds in Mumbai. «What kind of a PIL (public interest litigation) is this? Cricketers will take care if they are not provided toilets. Why an advocate should be bothered about it,» a bench of Justices A S Oka and A G Masih observed. The bench was hearing a petition filed by a lawyer, who had challenged the high court's June last year order disposing of his petition. In his PIL filed before the high court, he had sought directions to the Mumbai Cricket Association and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to provide drinking water and other facilities to players during practice or unofficial matches on public grounds.

Hunter Biden pleads guilty to tax evasion charges
Joe Biden's son Hunter pleaded guilty in a tax evasion trial on Thursday, without reaching the deal he had sought with prosecutors, in a case that has been an embarrassment for the US president. The 54-year-old admitted nine counts related to failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes over the past decade, money that prosecutors said he splurged instead on luxury living, sex workers and a drug habit. The pleas came on the day jury selection for a trial had been due to start, and hours after Biden had offered to plead guilty in the hope of striking a deal that might keep him out of prison.
