Nvidia to take Intel's spot on Dow Jones Industrial Average
Intel will be replaced by Nvidia on the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average index after a 25-year run, underscoring the shift in the chipmaking market and marking another setback for the struggling semiconductor firm. Nvidia will join the index next week along with paint-maker Sherwin-Williams, which will replace Dow, S&P Dow Jones Indices said on Friday. Once the dominant force in chipmaking, Intel has in recent years ceded its manufacturing edge to rival TSMC and missed out on the generative artificial intelligence boom after missteps including passing on an investment in ChatGPT-owner OpenAI.

Samsung’s sudden $122 billion wipeout shows the cost of sleeping on AI
Samsung Electronics Co. looked primed to benefit from the global AI boom: profits were surging and its stock was rising toward an all-time high. Now, South Korea’s biggest company has become a stark example of how quickly fortunes can turn in an industry where the spoils go to those who maintain a technological edge. As concerns mount that the company is losing out to smaller rival SK Hynix Inc. in AI memory and failing to gain on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. in outsourced chipmaking, Samsung shares have tumbled 32% from this year’s peak on July 9. The company has lost $122 billion of market value in that span, more than any other chipmaker worldwide.

The rise and decline of Intel
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger inherited a troubled company that had lost its edge in manufacturing skills and had ceded to rivals the hugely lucrative markets for chips used in mobile phones and artificial intelligence. 1968 — Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore found Intel, helping reshape California's Santa Clara Valley from fruit orchards into the Silicon Valley tech hub. 1971 — Intel introduces the 4004, the world's first commercially made programmable microprocessor, with 2,300 transistors. These were among the first chips that could be programmed to perform specific functions, unlike previous processors that were hardwired only for a certain task — a turning point in the history of the semiconductor industry that laid the groundwork for the development of CPUs.

Every cloud can have a desi silver lining
artificial intelligence (AI) revolution – this was Nvidia founder and chief executiveJensen Huang’s clarion call to India Inc at ET Conversations in Mumbai last Friday. The Indian market is currently dominated by Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. But are there any domestic players that are equipped to take on the three global hyperscalers? There are local alternatives, such as E2E, according to Pratik Desai, founder of agricultural AI startup Kissan AI – which uses Azure as the primary cloud provider and AWS as a secondary cloud provider – but they are catching up in terms of cost and integrated services.

‘India has unique strengths to help it win the AI race’
startup ecosystem, the strength of its digital economy and the proliferation of the world’s largest global capability centres (GCCs) in the country will position India as one of the top three artificial intelligence (AI) economies globally, said Shanker Trivedi, senior vice president of enterprise business at Nvidia, the world’s largest chip maker, in conversation with Himanshi Lohchab & Surabhi Agarwal. “India has unique characteristics. Some other regions are still a fragmented market. But India has always been one market with one currency, even while multiple cultures exist,” he told ET in an exclusive interview. “Even the market in Nagaland is bigger, I can assure you, than some other nations. And I bet you, there’s somebody in Kohima right now planning a startup using this amazing infrastructure and platform,” said Trivedi, who has helmed Nvidia’s enterprise business for 15 years and is now a key member of chief executive Jensen Huang’s core team.

Mission Possible: Ingredients are here for India to manufacture AI, lead AI revolution, says Nvidia's Jensen Huang
Artificial Intelligence is making computers an instrument for everyone and not just for the privileged few, believes Jensen Huang, the iconic founder and chief executive of chip maker Nvidia. He allayed the fears that AI could consume jobs or replace humans and said that the technology will make everything more efficient and productive, saving key resources and elevating human capabilities. In a free-wheeling conversation with Sruthijith KK at the ET Conversations event in Mumbai on Friday, Huang, 61, who steered the company out of turbulent early years and turned it into a $3.43 trillion behemoth that it is today, said that he still wakes up fearing that Nvidia could even now go out of business. No one in technology should get too comfortable or complacent, said the top boss helming the world’s second most valued company. His message to India’s IT services industry was unequivocal: Move from the back office to the front office and lead the AI revolution. Edited excerpts: I want to start with a core technical question. How is your leather jacket holding up in the Mumbai heat? (Laughs) It’s fine. Thank you! I enjoy the heat.

Indian IT must hitch an AI ride to front office: Nvidia's Jensen Huang
artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, transforming itself into the world’s front office from its back office, said Jensen Huang, founder and chief executive of chip maker Nvidia. He also called for the regulation of AI while dismissing fears that it would replace humans, at the second ET Conversations in Mumbai on Friday that was attended by thought leaders, business chieftains and policymakers. The country has all the ingredients needed to capitalise on the opportunity that will be thrown up by AI thanks to the digital infrastructure that’s in place and software capabilities developed over the years, he said. “India has one of the largest digital ecosystems,” said Huang in his conversation with ET’s Sruthijith KK. “It is an opportunity to reinvent from being the back office of the world, to becoming the front office. From being a cost-reduction centre, to an AI-driven ecosystem.”

AI exports bigger opportunity for India than chips, says Nvidia’s Huang
