Enormous challenge awaits Vinesh Phogat, five more Indians chase success in Paris
Vinesh Phogat will have to shake off a tumultuous build-up to the Paris Games when she takes mat, aiming for an elusive Olympic medal, while five of her colleagues will also strive to write their own success stories at the biggest stage when the wrestling event begins here Monday. Vinesh is easily India's most accomplished woman wrestler, with two World Championships, three CWG and eight Asian Championships medals adorning her cabinet, but her previous two Olympic campaigns have ended in heartbreaks. She had returned from Rio (2016) with just a broken leg, but from Tokyo (2021), she came back with her soul scarred after a crushing defeat 'by fall' in the quarterfinals. She was accused of misconduct and suspended by the WFI for several alleged transgressions. She claimed to have endured bouts of depression, and she was not sure of returning to the mat but she did. Not only she returned but also waged a battle outside the mat when she accused the WFI chief of sexual misconduct.

Meet the nations that have never won an Olympic medal (and two that just did)
countries are winning most of the Olympic medals every two years, that's because it's largely true. Even though more than 150 countries and territories have claimed a medal since the modern Games began in 1896, the list of winners is top-heavy. Entering the Paris Summer Games, the United States has the most, by far, with 2,975 medals, according to the International Olympic Committee's research wing. A group of usual suspects follow: the former Soviet Union (1,204), Germany (1,058), Great Britain (955), France (898). Nearly 70 countries and territories, though — roughly a third of the parade of nations — cannot boast an Olympic medalist in any discipline, summer or winter. Some, like South Sudan, which sent its first team to the Olympics in 2016, have only just begun trying. Others, like Monaco, have been at it for more than a century.

gender debate). However, once boxer extraordinaire Imane Khelif was living at the fringes of the society, selling bread on the streets. Khelif, who sparked global outrage when she overpowered her opponent in 46 seconds, as well as an invasive discourse on her gender identity recently talked about having a rough childhood. In an interview with the Algerian TV channel Canal Algerie, the boxer said that she faced many hurdles early in her career, as many of her family members were opposed to her pursuing this profession. “I come from a conservative region and family. Boxing was a sport dedicated only to men,” she told the channel.

Manu Bhaker Today Match Result: Indian ace shooter from Jhajjar misses third Olympic medal
Manu Bhaker missed the third medal in the Olympics. She finished at the fourth spot at the 25m sports pistol event with 28 points at the Chateauroux shooting range. The 22-year-old, already the first Indian athlete to win two bronze medals in a single edition of the Olympics, secured a spot in the final by placing second in the qualification rounds on Friday. Bhaker dominated both the 'precision' and 'rapid' rounds in the qualification phase, achieving an aggregate score of 590. This performance placed her just behind Hungary's Veronika Major, who equaled the Olympic record with a score of 592. In the medal event Manu Bhaker was eliminated by Veronika Major, who secured the Bronze medal with 31 points. Bhaker's resurgence in form can be credited to her reunion with former shooter-turned-coach Jaspal Rana. She has already earned two bronze medals at these Games: one in the 10m women's air pistol and another in the 10m air pistol mixed team event alongside Sarabjot Singh.

All eyes will be on Manu Bhaker when she will be in action from 1 PM IST onwards in Chatearoux, whereas the nation will also pin their hopes on Bhajan Kaur and Deepika Kumari to clinch a medal in archery after a close heartbreak on Friday.

Back at Olympics after 40 years, Venezuela's 60-year-old trap shooter Martinez vows to carry on till LA28
Venezuelan trap shooter Leonel Martinez, age is just a number. He is back at the Olympics after 40 long years and is not ready to walk into the sunset just yet. Martinez finished 28th in men's trap competition of the Paris Games, missing only nine of his 125 shots. It was his second Games appearance after the Los Angeles Olympics back in 1984. The next edition of the mega event will be staged in Los Angeles and Martinez says it is only fitting he finishes from where he started four decades ago. «I have a light inside guiding me towards Los Angeles 2028. That is the future for me. The work for that starts right now. I will be working with my body and with my mind. This sport is 90 per cent mental,» said Martinez, who is not a firm believer in sports science.

Olympic triathletes will swim in Paris' Seine River after days of concerns about water quality
Seine River, the women's and men's Olympic triathlon races will go forward Wednesday with a swim in the famed Paris waterway. The decision to go ahead with the Seine swim for the triathlon competitions is a big win for the city, Olympics organizers and the athletes. Officials undertook an ambitious plan, including 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in infrastructure improvements, to clean up the long-polluted Seine and have been steadfast in their insistence that the swimming portion of the triathlon and the marathon swimming events next week could safely be held in the river.
