"Will look to win series 3-2": Ben Stokes after losing Rajkot Test to India by 434 runs
434-run loss against India on Sunday at Rajkot, England Test skipper Ben Stokes asserted that the team will look to win the rest of the two Tests at Ranchi and Dharamshala respectively to seal the series 3-2. A five-wicket haul by ace all-rounder and first-innings centurion Ravindra Jadeja and top knocks from skipper Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, double centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal and debutant Sarfaraz Khan saw England sink to its knees and surrender to the hosts inside four days. «Ben Duckett played an unbelievable innings. That was the tone we wanted to set throughout the innings. It was about identifying that opportunity and getting as close to India's total. We wanted to bowl yesterday but it was earlier than when we wanted. Sometimes game plans don't work and that was the case,» Stokes said in the post-match presentation.

Cricket-England's Stokes stands by 'Bazball' despite India shellacking
England's heaviest test defeats could not shake Ben Stokes's conviction in their high-risk approach and the touring skipper believes they can still win the five-test series in India. England's bold tactics under Stokes and coach Brendon 'Baz' McCullum have revitalised test cricket and India, who have not lost a test series on home soil since 2012, were always going to be a litmus test of that philosophy. India crushed England by 434 runs, their biggest win in terms of runs, in the third match in Rajkot to go 2-1 up in the series but Stokes will not abandon 'Bazball' yet despite criticism that it borders on recklessness.

CM firm that ministers would have to take LS poll plunge if local leaders favoured their names
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday asserted that ministers would have no choice but to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls if that was the overwhelming opinion of local MLAs and party leaders, setting off worries in sections of ministers who are loath to the idea. The CM, responding to queries at Malavalli in Mandya district over social welfare minister HC Mahadevappa’s public refusal to contest the LS polls, said the party would go by the recommendation of the local MLAs, party candidates who lost the assembly polls, as well as block, and district presidents. Be it Mahadevappa or any other minister, the party would give the ticket to whoever the local leaders wanted, the CM said, suggesting that the ministers would have to take the plunge if the situation demanded that. The social welfare minister had, on Saturday, told the media that he did not want to contest the polls when he was told his name was among the potential candidates the party’s survey had revealed. A displeased Mahadevappa said the survey should probably also include the names of the CM and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar as they were also competent and popular leaders to contest the LS election.

Justin Trudeau's welcome mat for immigrants wears thin amid Canada housing crunch
Justin Trudeau has relied on immigration to drive economic growth and plug labor gaps, but now he is hitting the brakes after a seismic shift in public opinion that could undermine his chances to win the next election. It was Trudeau's father, Pierre, who championed immigration as prime minister in the early 1970s, promoting «multiculturalism» as government policy. Over time, Canadians have come to see the country's diversity as part of its identity, like the maple leaf and hockey. Think you check all the immigration boxes? Find out But when international students led a surge in immigration in the wake of the pandemic, the public mood soured as rental costs soared and services like healthcare came under strain.

UK by-election results deliver double trouble for Rishi Sunak
Rishi Sunak suffered two heavy blows to his leadership ahead of a general election later this year as the Opposition Labour Party overturned strong Conservative majorities to win by-elections in England on Friday. Labour's Dan Egan won the House of Commons seat of Kingswood, south-west England, and the party's Gen Kitchen won Wellingborough, in the East Midlands region of England. The results reflect double trouble for the British Indian leader as the Conservatives had won both seats by decisive margins at the last general election under Boris Johnson in December 2019.

The political hot potatoes on which urban India disagrees with the BJP
first part of this series, published on Monday, showed that support for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had increased substantially in the latest round of the YouGov-Mint-CPR Millennial Survey, with nearly 47% of the respondents favouring the party. Limited trust in the Opposition alliance and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal appeal have played a major role in this surge. However, this doesn't mean there is support for the BJP’s position on all key issues related to its 2024 election campaign.
