SC seeks Centre's response on PIL seeking palliative care as part of national health programme
Supreme Court sought the Centre's response on Thursday on a PIL seeking a direction to authorities to provide palliative care to terminally-ill persons as part of the national health programme. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra took note of the submissions made by senior advocate Jayna Kothari, who appeared in the court on behalf of the petitioner, that palliative care should be recognised and made part of the national health programme. The court did not agree to one of the prayers in the public interest litigation (PIL) matter filed by Bengaluru resident Rajshree Nagaraju that the right to get palliative care be declared as a part of right to health under Article 21 (protection of life and liberty) of the Constitution. «You seek mandamus (a writ) stating palliative care comes under Article 21. I do not think that you need to pursue this prayer. The right to palliative care is part of the right to health and life… Article 21 covers all aspects of human existence,» the CJI said.

Need to develop ecosystem to make our products accessible, says Geoff Martha, chairman and CEO of Medtronic
medical device maker Medtronic, which gave the world the first battery-powered pacemaker seven decades ago, is betting big on India. Geoff Martha, its chairman and CEO, told Viswanath Pilla in an interview that Medtronic's next phase of growth in the country will involve evaluating possibilities of redesigning products to make them more affordable for patients, sourcing components locally, and manufacturing in India. Edited excerpts: How are you planning to achieve Medtronic's goal of reaching 1 billion patients every year? We reach two patients every second and we're very proud of it. But 80 million people is a fraction of the world's population… With these digital technologies coming in, I think that'll allow us to access so many more patients. Because it's going to personalise these therapies, lower the cost. So that's the aspiration that we need to map our strategy to get to 1 billion a year.
