Brief exchange of firing in Doda forests; Villagers join search operation
armed forces established brief contact with terrorists on Wednesday during the search operation in the Bhata Desa forest area of Doda district, where four Army personnel and a policeman were killed in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. Village defence guards also opened fire on suspicious movement observed outside Melan village of the Desa area. Two explosive shells were recovered from the Sinoo forest area of Gandoh in the same district, where three infiltrators were killed on June 26 and a huge cache of arms and ammunition, including a US-made M4 carbine, were recovered. The exchange of fire took place within a span of a few hours during the search operation. However, no casualty or injuries were reported from either side. «Search operation is going on in the area, but they (terrorists) took advantage of the challenging terrain, thick forest and darkness and managed to flee,» said an official.

Donald Trump says Taiwan should pay more for defence and dodges questions if he would defend the island
Donald Trump demanded the self-governed island of Taiwan pay for US protection, dodged the question of whether he would defend the island from Beijing's military action, and accused the island of taking the semiconductor industry away from the United States. “Taiwan should pay us for defence,” Trump said, in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek. “You know, we're no different than an insurance company." Trump's remarks, made public Tuesday, mark a departure from the stance of President Joe Biden, who has said several times that he would send troops to defend the island, and add uncertainty to Trump's approach to Taiwan at a time his running mate, JD Vance, has called China the “biggest threat” for the United States.

Suvendu Adhikari, several BJP leaders and MLAs and leaders held a four-hour dharna in front of Raj Bhawan with post-poll violence victims on Sunday following Calcutta High Court's permission. Meanwhile, LoP, claiming Hindus have been prevented from voting in the last Lok Sabha and recently held bypoll, will launch a portal tomorrow where people who have failed to vote in Lok Sabha, Panchayat and bypolls will be able to register their names. «Stopping a particular community from voting is a crime. Diamond Harbour, Falta, Baduria, and North Bengal's Dinhata and in many other places, Hindus are prevented from voting. It was seen in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, last Panchayat polls and even in bypolls. More than two lakh voters were stopped in bypolls. I will organize a movement against this,» Adhikari said. At least 300 victims of post-poll violence, who are staying in the shelter of BJP today, joined the dharna today. Adhikari, senior leader Tathagata Ray, former BJP MP Arjun Singh, MLAs were present at the dharna. 'Hidden terrorism' trend emerges in J-K, security agencies on high alert
Security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir are grappling with what they call the "hidden threat" of "conservation and consolidation" tactics employed by infiltrating terrorists, which was evident in the recent ambushes and encounters in North Kashmir and Kathua district. Analysing the ambushes and encounters with terrorists, officials in the know of the matter said while security agencies are on high alert, the lack of ground-level intelligence — human intelligence (HUMINT) — hampers operations. Reliance on technical intelligence (TECHINT) has not been fruitful as terrorists use online activity to mislead authorities. Officials feel that there is an urgent need for heightened surveillance to counter foreign terrorists, especially in the Jammu region. The region, previously known for its peaceful atmosphere, has recently seen a surge in terror incidents, particularly in border districts such as Poonch, Rajouri, Doda and Reasi. Attacks on an IAF convoy, a pilgrim bus and the recent killing of soldiers in Kathua highlight the evolving threat.

View: Modi's visit shows our relations with Russia not legacy holdout
India-Russia ties. PM Modi and President Vladimir Putin, two of the most experienced world leaders, discussed bilateral relations and the fast-changing worldwide landscape in a five-hour conversation. If personal connection between the leaders is the diplomatic measure, the first day was successful. PM Modi received Russia's highest civilian decoration, the Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle. PM Modi's last visit to Russia, for the 2019 Vladivostok summit, signalled India's participation in the Russian Far East to establish fresh leverage to counter Chinese dominance in North East Asia. A maritime corridor from Vladivostok to Chennai to connect to the Northern Sea route was meant to protect India's Arctic energy and commodity interests. Five years later, with little implementation, the 2024 summit revisited several 2019 projects. New consulates in Yekaterinburg and Kazan will strengthen India's diplomatic ties in Russia's key regions. Bilateral relations will regain momentum only if projects in energy, fertilisers, and commodities are converted into long-term agreements. Doing so will require private sector involvement. Both governments should encourage enterprises that are willing to break new ground in investment and joint ventures, building leverage in fast-changing global marketplaces that lasts longer than trade partners.

Holding Pak responsible for terror not sufficient, need to go for self-introspection: Jitendra Singh
Jitendra Singh on Saturday said holding only Pakistan responsible for the recent spike in terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir is not sufficient as he called for self-introspection to end illegal activities, which benefit terrorism in the Union Territory. He said the government is implementing a new strategy, which includes deployment of army in the higher reaches to ensure that peace is restored within one week in Kathua, where five army personnel were killed and an equal number injured in an ambush by the terrorists on July 8. «The recent terror incidents (in Jammu region) carried out by infiltrators from Pakistan is condemnable. But repeatedly saying that Pakistan has done this is not sufficient. We have to ask ourselves and inner-souls what we have done to end social evils which are benefitting terrorism,» the minister of state in the prime minister's office told reporters in Kathua. The minister was in Kathua, part of his Udhampur parliamentary constituency, for a 'Public Darbar' — his first after getting elected for the third term — to meet the public and resolve their issues. Kathua Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Minhas and other officers were also present.
