Kolkata medic rape-murder case: War of words break out between BJP & TMC over 'dancing girl' in alleged protest video
TMC and BJP on Monday engaged in a war of words after TMC MP Saket Gokhale shared an alleged video of a girl dancing in a 'protest for RG Kar'. Taking to social media platform X, Gokhale shared a video of a girl dancing in the backdrop of posters that read 'justice for our sister'. He accused the BJP of hijacking a protest for political agendas. «Sickening! This is allegedly from a “protest for RG Kar” organized by BJP in Bengal. Is THIS BJP’s idea of “respecting women”? Creepy BJP misogynists hijacked a protest for political agendas with ZERO concern for the victim or any woman,» Gokhale stated.

Off the field: MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, other cricketers start up a different game
Cricketers, both past and present, are making equity investments or even turning founders of various new ventures, joining a growing cohort of celebrities looking beyond traditional endorsements. MS Dhoni has acquired a stake in IPO-bound jewellery maker Bluestone, while venture fund Peak XV Partners is set to back star batsman Sachin Tendulkar’s sports shoe startup, said people briefed on the matter. According to filings, former cricketer Yuvraj Singh has taken a stake in sports athleisure firm Agilitas Sports, founded by Abhishek Ganguly, who was managing director of Puma India. “From focusing on endorsement deals, athletes are now taking greater interest in equity deals, as well as deeper roles in company operations – especially for the ones who have retired from international cricket but built a large brand value,” said one person aware of the deals. “This is becoming a much bigger area of interest–similar to global celebrity deals.”

Who is Pavel Durov, CEO of messaging app Telegram?
Pavel Durov, billionaire founder and CEO of the Telegram messaging app, was arrested at the Bourget airport outside Paris on Saturday evening, TF1 TV and BFM TV said, citing unnamed sources. TF1 and BFM both said the investigation was focused on a lack of moderators on Telegram, and that police considered that this situation allowed criminal activity to go on undeterred on the messaging app. Telegram did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The French Interior Ministry and police had no comment. Russia's Foreign Ministry said it was taking steps to «clarify» the situation and questioned whether Western non-governmental organizations (NGOs) would seek his release…

Trai move to curb fraud could ring in an SMS outage next month
Consumers may face disruptions in getting service and transactional messages from banks, financial institutions and ecommerce firms on their mobile phones from next month following a telecom regulator move aimed at curbing spam, specifically phishing attempts. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has asked telcos to stop transmitting messages containing URLs, OTT links, APKs (Android application packages) or call-back numbers that are not whitelisted--or registered with telcos--by senders from September 1. The regulator's ultimatum means banks, financial institutions and online platforms must get their templates and content registered with operators by the August 31 deadline, failing which messages containing these elements will be blocked.

Quick-commerce vs e-commerce: Ready for the new pricefight in town?
ecommerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart by matching their prices across groceries and fast-selling general merchandise, triggering a price war in the home delivery space. This is a departure from the earlier pricing strategy of quick-commerce players who typically charged 10-15% premium over average ecommerce marketplace prices for instant deliveries, industry executives said. The strategy now is to win consumers from large ecommerce at a time when urban shoppers increasingly prefer faster and scheduled deliveries, they said.

How the advent of e-commerce has reinvented the growth of traditional retail
Employment and Consumer Welfare’ released on Wednesday. The report’s findings are principally based on a panIndia survey of 2,062 online vendors, 2,031 brick-and-mortar vendors, and 8,209 consumers of products from ecommerce websites. It was conducted across 35 cities in 20 states and UTs. The survey itself was guided by a robust methodology and conducted by PRICE (People Research on India’s Consumer Economy). Given the veracity of the survey findings, it would be most useful for policymakers to take cognisance of these empirical findings. One of the most striking takeaway is that the apocalypse narrative of large-scale destruction of kirana stores is rejected by brick-and-mortar vendors themselves. The survey asked vendors if they were aware of any physical stores that had shut down in their vicinity since 2020, and what they thought the contributing reasons were. Less than 20% reported a physical store closure in their neighbourhood since 2020 when the pandemic drove an ecommerce boom. Only 6% of offline vendors attributed these store closures to consumers shifting to online shopping. A slightly higher proportion — 8% — attributed physical store closures to the growth of large organised retail.
