Rajnath Singh is likely to meet his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun at an event in Laos next week. Following the border patrolling agreement with China that led to disengagement of troops in eastern Ladakh, Singh-Dong meeting would be the first high-level engagement between the two countries. Singh will visit Laos to attend ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting Plus (ADMM Plus), where he is likely to meet his outgoing US counterpart as well. Sources said while the meeting with Dong has not been finalised yet, the interaction could take place on the sidelines of the two-day event.

The acquisition was finalised this week and will see Murugappa, along with investment firm Avenue Capital Group, take full ownership of Hubergroup from Cornelius Treuhand Holding, pending regulatory approval. The transaction includes $160 million to refinance Hubergroup's debt and a $150-million equity infusion from Murugappa besides working capital, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Jharkhand Assembly elections, with Aquil Akhtar of Samajwadi Party emerging as the wealthiest, declaring assets exceeding Rs 400 crore, according to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) released on Thursday. The Jharkhand Election Watch and ADR analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 522 out of 528 candidates in 38 constituencies for the second phase of the elections, scheduled for November 20. Of the 522 candidates, 127 (24 per cent) are crorepatis, while 148 (28 per cent) have declared criminal cases against themselves, the report said. «The role of money power in our elections is evident from the fact that all major political parties field wealthy candidates,» the report stated.

Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) was on Thursday declared banned by the government for five years for its involvement in violent incidents and for carrying out activities prejudicial to India's sovereignty and integrity. In a notification, the Union Home Ministry said the Central government is of the opinion that the HNLC has declared objective for secession of areas in the Meghalaya, largely inhabited by Khasi and Jaintia tribes, and continued intimidation and bullying of the civilian population to extort funds for their organisation. It said the group is also maintaining links with other insurgent groups of the northeastern region for carrying out extortion and intimidation and indulging in 48 criminal cases, including that of explosion or planting of explosives in Meghalaya, from November 2019 to June 2024. During this period, 73 cadres of the outfit were also arrested by the security forces.

Infibeam Avenues, which runs payment gateway CCAvenue, reported a total operational revenue of Rs 1,016 crore in the September quarter of FY24, up almost 30% from Rs 787 crore a year ago. Its net profit for the quarter stood at Rs 47.4 crore, up 16.7% from Rs 40.6 crore a year earlier. While the company saw its operational revenue grow steadily, its expenses shot up too. In the second quarter of the current fiscal, Infibeam Avenues reported total expenses of Rs 957 crore, up 30% from Rs 734 crore. A major chunk of the company’s expenses are operational expenses, part of which is a payment processing charge which it needs to pay banks for settling transactions generated via the CCAvenue gateway.
