Should investors worry about India-Mauritius tax treaty amendments? Punit Shah answers
«There used to be the provisions like general anti avoidance rules like GAAR, which required the investors like FPIs who are based in Mauritius need to have substance in Mauritius in order to claim the benefit of India-Mauritius tax treaty,» says Punit Shah, Partner, Dhruva Advisors. Let us talk about this treaty and this change that we are making. What is the impact that one should actually expect from this? Is it too much of a worry for investors from Mauritius? Essentially what it says is that India-Mauritius tax treaty was there for several years now. It provides capital gains tax exemption on the equity shares, on derivatives, on debt instruments. The treaty was amended in 2017 where the capital gains exemption on equity shares was taken away and the capital gains exemption on the derivatives and debt instruments did continue.

Time for greed over but still betting on 6 metal & specialty chemical stocks: Sanjiv Bhasin
Sanjiv Bhasin, Director, IIFL Securities, says in October, when the FII short position was over 74%, that was when one had to be greedy. Now they have turned long on 18% and there is no short position. So, now, one should be fearful. You have to take it at your own risk reward. I see no risk reward right now till the earnings season is over as a large part of the positives of earnings are already priced in.” Bhasin says: “I continue to be positive on a buy on Vedanta on any decline and a buy on Nalco and SAIL. In specialty chemicals, UPL, Navin, Aarti are looking good.” You had earlier warned that this month could get a little volatile and looking at the CPI and the PPI print in the US and the way the markets panned out from there, it seems like we got to brace ourselves for a little bit of global volatility? Sanjiv Bhasin: That is very much on the cards. However, like you see in the US, the Magnificent Seven are again touted to have their best week in the last three. So, weak data or hotter than expected inflation is all getting absorbed. It is typical of a bull market which is ignoring bad news just on the pretext that people are feeling missed out.

FIR filed against Delhi Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar after U'khand NGO Pleasant Valley goes to court over 'scam'
Delhi Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar and his subordinate YVVJ Rajasekhar following the orders of a court in Uttarakhand's Almora town. On March 2, the court admitted a complaint by an NGO, Pleasant Valley Foundation, against the officials and asked the revenue police to register a case against them and investigate the charges. Pleasant Valley Foundation alleged that the officials sent four people to a school run by the NGO in Dadakada village on February 14. The four men vandalised the office chamber of the NGO's joint secretary and took away files, records, documents and pen drives which contained evidence of their involvement in scams. They allegedly threatened to frame the NGO's officials if complaints of corruption filed by it against them with the Vigilance department and other forums were not immediately withdrawn, the complainant said.

We cherish the connection with India, says INSEAD dean Francisco Veloso
INSEAD, one of the world's leading graduate business schools, has no immediate plans to open a campus in India though it remains committed to developing and strengthening industry-academia research in future with top Indian multinationals and unicorn startups. Francisco Veloso, who took over as dean of the institute in September last year, says Indian students form the most represented nationality at the global business school with representation of about 12-15%, higher than Chinese students at 9-10%. In an exclusive interview with ET’s Rica Bhattacharyya, Veloso talks about the inroads AI is making into classrooms and the rising interest among Indian business leaders to learn this transformational technology. Edited excerpts: INSEAD has set up its physical presence over the years in multiple countries. Do you have any plans to set up a campus in India? India is a very important and fast-growing country for the world, and has an increasing significance internationally. We at INSEAD have many ties with India. About 10% of our faculty are originally from India and it is one of the most represented nationalities in our faculty. We have many alumni in India and have important partnerships with them in the country.

Who are the 'vote-eating' Corbett leopards? The reason behind Uttarakhand's election dilemma
Uttarakhand's serene surroundings of Nainital and Pauri districts, villagers near the Corbett Tiger Reserve are dealing with the challenges of human-animal conflict. In the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on April 19 in Garhwal (Pauri Garhwal) and Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar, one of the major issues is the conflict between humans and big cats. The BJP won both seats in 2019. As the polls approach again, voters are faced with a decision: to boycott or to vote? While some consider boycotting, others are considering the 'None Of The Above (NOTA)' option. The frustration has grown due to what villagers perceive as a lack of government intervention. «Villagers are not inclined to vote for any candidate. Neither our MP nor any MLA has paid attention to our plight,» convener of Sanyukt Sangharsh Committee, Lalit Upreti told TOI.
