Meta watchdog raises 'serious questions' on anti-immigrant posts
Meta's independent content watchdog said Thursday there were «serious questions» about how the social media giant deals with anti-immigrant content, particularly in Europe. The Oversight Board, established by Meta in 2020 and often called its «supreme court», launched a probe after seeing a «significant number» of appeals over anti-immigrant content. The board has chosen two symbolic cases-one from Germany and the other from Poland-to assess whether Meta is following human rights law and its own policies on hate speech.

Kangana Ranaut's movie Emergency gets censor certificate; release date soon
The CBFC's clearance comes after some back-and-forth between the filmmakers and the board. Co-produced by Zee Entertainment, the production had agreed to make several cuts suggested by the censor board, ending a prolonged period of uncertainty regarding its release. Kangana Ranaut, who directed and co-produced the film, expressed her relief on social media, tweeting: «We are glad to announce we have received the censor certificate for our movie Emergency. We will be announcing the release date soon. Thank you for your patience and support.» The film, initially slated for release on September 6, faced delays after objections were raised by Sikh organizations, particularly the Shiromani Akali Dal, which argued that the film misrepresented certain historical facts. This led to a temporary stall in the release of the film's trailer, adding to the challenges the production had already faced.

Where Trump goes, violence follows
Donald Trump speaks at a fourth-grade level but without him I might never have looked up the word “stochastic.” I began noticing the word in academic circles as Trump made his first run for president in 2016. Stochastic is an adjective, derived from Greek, meaning randomly determined. In social science, it suggests a random probability distribution that may be statistically meaningful without being precisely predictable. Back then, political scientists weren’t using “stochastic” to describe Trump’s meandering speech patterns, which have only become more disjointed and fantastical. They were talking about the violence that he generates, randomly yet also certainly. Violence and Trump are inextricable. After Trump and MAGA propagandist Elon Musk spewed lies about the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the wake of Hurricane Helene, threats and harassment prompted FEMA temporarily to withdraw field teams in North Carolina while the agency assessed the danger to its personnel. A man possessing a handgun and rifle was arrested outside a grocery store that was being used as a relief site. He was charged with a misdemeanor — going armed to the terror of the public. “We know that significant misinformation online contributes to threats against response workers on the ground,” North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said in a statement.

Elon Musk's empire risks being targeted by EU for potential X fines
X that it may calculate fines against the social-media platform by including revenue from Elon Musk’s other businesses, including Space Exploration Technologies Corp. and Neuralink Corp., an approach that would significantly increase the potential penalties for violating content moderation rules. Under the EU’s Digital Services Act, the bloc can slap online platforms with fines of as much as 6% of their yearly global revenue for failing to tackle illegal content and disinformation or follow transparency rules. Regulators are considering whether sales from SpaceX, Neuralink, xAI and the Boring Company, in addition to revenue generated from the social network, should be included to determine potential fines against X, people familiar with the matter said, asking not to be identified because the information isn’t public. The European Commission has been investigating X for several potential breaches of the Digital Services Act, newly introduced rules meant to ensure platforms police illegal content. The EU is leading a global crackdown on harmful online content and disinformation that’s sparked increasingly vocal responses from Musk, who has said such measures restrict free speech.
